If you still want blue, could you go with a pale, icy version? Maybe if it's not such a saturated color, it won't have guests thinking "fourth of July".
Also - you're getting married on my birthday. Yay!
I second the icy blue to distract from the patriotic-ness. Also, what about a turquoise or teal? If those don't work for you, I still wouldn't scrap your blue dream. My venue kind of clashes with my colors (light pink and gold are my colors and the venue is black, white, and RED) but once I put the pink linens, pink flowers, pink bridesmaids dresses, etc. in the room the red carpet around the edge of the room probably won't be too noticable. If you've always wanted blue, I definitely wouldn't get rid of it. Plus, I think red is a nice accent color for blues. If your wedding is 90% blue and metallics, no one is going to see ten percent red and think its July 4th. It will all work out! Good luck!
Oh, and to answer the original question (lol) I think black or white or brown would look great with red and gold. :]
I like the idea of cream colors, like peach and gold, warmer tones.
Do you have any photos of the venue? Most people don't really think the venue is a part of the scheme, but I'd love to see what color red you are talking about.
Well, I don't have a good pic of the venue because I'm in a different city at the moment! I do have one and it's in my bio. Unfortunately, after watching a video of the venue, I realized the color red is closer to this
and if you pair that with my blue:
Well...."Ooh say can you see?" what I mean? Haha! But, I really like the idea of a paler blue or even a teal! Thanks for everyone's help!
What about cornflower blue? That looks amazing with red. My photographer (and cousin!) did a wedding with cornflower blue and red and it was gorgeous!
I see turquoise and red around the blogs a lot lately and that's cute (and does not scream 4th of July).
ditto on the turquoise and red - i'm wearing a big honkin turquoise ring today with my orangey-red cardigan and it pops like crazy.
What if you threw in some greys to tone down the patriotism a bit? if you have a pic of your venue, post it.
i like turquoise and red and apparently turquoise is THE hot color right now! also you could do aqua/tiffany blue and red. i think that would be very chic (and was my original color scheme until i realized that MY venue would not work at all with it!!)
while i realize this may not be what you are going for, i think this wedding uses blue and red in a really cool wayhttp://weddings.theknot.com/Real-Weddings/49925/view.aspx?id=49925&type=1&location=119&ps=100&keep=881015080&MsdVisit=1
Here's the best pic of the venue I have at the moment!

But, like I said, the red in the photo is kind of off!
Thanks for all of your suggestions!

So, for a long time I've pictured my bridesmaids in blue. This has gone from cobalt, to cornflower, to lapis--you get the picture. But, I recently discovered that my dream venue is not the burgundy and gold I thought it was--it's RED. Really red! My blue scheme now looks like a patriotic parade!
So, I plan to incorporate jewel tones in the flowers, but what colors go with red and gold that I can use for bridesmaids?
