We're doing the same colors as you (green, brown, ivory) and I'm picking up a swatch at David's Bridal for each of the girls. I'm getting the color "Holly" which is a really dark almost Christmasy green.
I'm also asking that they find something in a specific fabric (chiffon) and a specific length (knee) to keep it cohesive. But they can get the dress anywhere they like.
I have 4 BMs.
Hope that helps!
I had 3 BMs and had them wear blue dresses of about the same length (to the knee). I gave them swatches I made up out of scraps from our invitations and a picture of the bouquet inspiration I gave our florist to help point them in the right direction. They looked lovely, and I know they appreciated choosing something that worked with their style and budget. :-) I've heard paint chips work well too to give them a color scheme to work with. Good luck.
I'm doing any dress in navy blue - that's the only requirement for my 5 BM (any length, fabric, style, etc.) I debated doing the different shades of one color, which is what it sounds like you're doing. Can you go shopping with each BM so that you have in mind what will all blend together? That's what I started to do, until all my gals picked a similar shade of navy blue - but it still gave me the opportunity to have one-on-one shopping time with each of them (which was fun).
Someone else suggested to me giving them paint samples with a spectrum of colors in the same shade/hue. Then they can take that shopping with them and get any of the green colors on those paint samples.
I am doing mismatched purple dresses. What I did was to create an account on the website Polyvore. Then I went "shopping" via the site and selected a bunch of dresses in varying deep purple shades (mostly from Nordstrom - they had some great options - but I made sure the girls understood that I didn't expect them to spend a fortune) and shoes in roughly the same silver color. I arranged them using Polyvore and sent the link to my bridesmaids so they could see the spectrum I was shooting for. So far one of them has bought her dress and she was on the darker end of the spectrum but definitely fitting within the guidelines I had suggested!
I only have 4 bridesmaids so I was also concerned about the cohesiveness, but I am getting them all matching wraps for the ceremony and there will be wearing shoes in the same color. With your color palatte, I would gravitate toward a gold or bronze metallic shoe. But then again you said you have more of an outdoorsy/rustic theme so perhaps that is too formal. If so, maybe brown would be good.
Thanks for all of the advice! I hadn't heard of Polyvore before--what a great site! Here's what I came up with...thinking about going with green dresses with champagne-->brown shoes...or should I just choose one color?
Oh yeah--forgot to mention that I love the bronze colored shoe idea...Not sure how easy it is to find bronze shoes though without accidentally ending up with gold shoes.
Here's the inspiration board I'm sending to my BMs...made in Polyvore:
I'm asking that they find a tea/knee length dress in any style, fabric, price range, etc. that's any shade of green (that's not radioactive), and cream/champagne colored shoes. Cant wait to see what they find!
I have a similar plan in purple - basically they can choose any dress that is purple and knee-length. And I made a similar board (but just by saving pics from different retailer's websites). I'm hoping that all four of us can go shopping together for them, but failing that they'll have a pretty good idea of what I'm after...
And I was thinking black shoes (probably letting them pick their own again), not sure about accessories yet (got 17 months to go, so I'm sure I'll figure it out!).

I'm not sure I like this option, here's why: Every wedding I have ever been to that contains bridesmaids with different dresses tends to sway my attention more towards the bridesmaids. Its your day girl, while I am with you on letting the bridesmaid pick what they want or being the complete opposite of a bridezilla, I strongly believe that you need to do something that will be cohesive and not sway the guests attention. Or maybe Im just a crazy lady with adhd, lol
My mismatched BM dresses were the hit of my wedding. Everyone was talking about how beautiful they looked. I had 6 girls and just let everyone go to town as far as dress, shoes, accessories. it was really fun for the guests who were into fashion. lol.

Hi Bees,
I'm needing a little help with some logistics here--I've decided I want to let my bridesmaids choose the dress they wear to my wedding so they can pick something they like and within their price range. My wedding colors are green (no specific shade), brown, and ivory, as it is an outdoor, mostly diy wedding. My wedding is also an overnight event that kind of has the feel of summer camp/family reunion--so laid back:)
I was thinking of having my BMs pick out green dresses. I've found that with a lot of the brides who have mismatched bridesmaids, they seem to have a more cohesive look when the colors of the shoes match, so the first question is, what color should I tell my BMs to pick for their shoes?
Second question: for those brides who are having their BMs pick out their own dresses, did you give them a few color swatches that they could match their dress too? I really like the look of the wedding party below, but I have 5 BMs...not 9, which means it will probably be harder to make the "mismatched BM dresses" look as cohesive. Any thoughts would be appreciated!
