1) they don't want you to find out the style/designer number and go find it somewhere else cheaper
2) they want to pressure you into buying RIGHTTHISMINUTE and not go home and think about it later with pictures (which is obviously the smart thing to do)
3) bridal shops are evil.
I think they don't want you to go order a cheaper knock off or try to shop around to find it previously worn, etc.
It is actually illegal for them to cut the tags out of the dresses. I would not work with a salon that didn that. As far as the pics, they do that because of copyright, I think, but that is really common. I was just crafty about taking photos with my phone, I would kick the salon lady out of the dressing room because I was "shy".

i read somewhere they they are allowed to remove tags BUT they cannot sell a gown that has had its tags removed - someone please correct me if im wrong
either way i think its stupid, i mean most shops advertise who they sell so if its a maggie store then go to the maggie site and search. industries like this are a dying breed and need to get with the program that shoppers are now smarter - i have the same issue with some scuba stores
I bought my dress from a store that not only allows you to take pictures, they take them FOR you and email you the ones you like after your appt
I also bought from a salon that had the store organized by designer, allowed you to take pictures, all the tags were present and intact, and the salon owner actually price compared *for me* at the salon and knocked a $100 off to beat the closest competitor. Yea, I reallllly don't get it.
But, thanks for explaining it!
LOL @ bridal salons are evil
I'll refer you to DayDreamWanderer's post on the subject. The summary is that it is technically illegal to cut tags out, but the loophole is that it's not illegal to do it if they replace that tag with a salon tag that gives the fiber content and place of origin.
I worked for a salon and our understanding of why pictures couldn't be taken was a) it was in our contracts with the designer and b) it's a way to prevent copyright theft. The designs shown at Bridal Market are sometimes changed based on the availabilty of materials or a sudden trend in bridal fashion. If there are no pictures between Bridal Market and the salons than it's harder for the replica makers to create knock-offs.
I have never been anywhere that wouldn't tell me the designer. That seems really weird to me.
As for the pictures, they (and mostly the designers) don't want you to get a knock off made, and their contracts with the designers protect againt that by not allowing you to take a picture until you have purchased the dress.
Can someone explain to me why a ton of bees have pics of themselves in dresses, when they put up polls to try to decide between 2 or more! Did they just get lucky and find a salon that was ok with pictures?
@love108: Pretty much...all the salons I went to allowed pictures, you can always call and ask when you're narrowing down where you'd like to dress shop.
@love108: It's kind of easy to take them with a phone when the consultant walks away.
always ask the salon for their rules... i got "tricked" into buying my dress because i took pictures at the end of the appointment in "the one" . davids bridal lets u take photos.. bridal exclusive does not.. there is signs everywhere saying photos are not allowed... so when the consultant said is this ur dress. i said yes/ she said u can take pictures. bridesmaids start clickin away she says how are u gonna pay for the dress we need 50% right now.
My salon let me take as many pics as I want and I took the pics home to show my mom who was not here when I shopped that helped me decide where I was buying my dress becaus ethe salon was so accomadating.
@pineapplelove: oh gosh please tell me where you had that experience because they deserve my business not someone worried about the small percentage who might possibly knock off a gown or find a better deal god forbid we be smart investors...
Most of the salons I went to let me take pics!, but we were too busy finding the dress and didn't take many pics.
@asianyoushi: Well they really can't make you buy a dress because you took pictures, you haven't signed anything promising them money, the worst they could do is ask you to leave for not following salon rules. If you had just said you weren't quite ready yet there is really nothing they could of done.

Why, when you go into a bridal boutique, can you not take pictures or be told the designer?
