When I think of purple and gold, I think of sports teams. Either the Lakers, the Vikings, or LSU basically. Perhaps purple and canary and then do accents in either pink or cream? They look very nice together and you won't have that sports feel to it.

i do personally feel like it'll lend itself to a lakers theme.
i used this tool, that i use for my work: http://kuler.adobe.com/#create/fromacolor
you can add the color to the middle and select a rule and it will tell you which other colors go with it, or start with some inspiration picture and it will select colors.
We are doing purple and yellow for our wedding. (FI picked because I couldn't decide and he's a vikings fan) Whenever someone asks what our colors are and I say purple and yellow, they don't think sports teams at all. They are just like oh those are nice spring colors. Maybe since yours is in the fall you could maybe to like eggplant and an actual gold color not yellow gold. I don't know thats just my suggestion if you are worried about association with sports teams.
What about adding another accent color? Maybe a lime green, another shade of purple, red, teal, or another jewel tone? If you just want to go with purple and gold, I think it could look Laker - ish if really overdone. But, maybe pick a lighter purple or a darker gold - different shades not generally associated with them - and bring in lots of neutral tones like blacks and ivorys to break everything up.

Thanks for the help ladies. I don't like yellow or pink and I want him to have a say about the colors for wedding so I know I am going to keep the gold, I was going to use a rich gold color not yellowish at all. I'm thinking I might change my color to a dark blue and also use creme or ivory. I'm just really in love with the 'lapis' color from davids bridal and thought that and gold with creme or ivory would look good together.

So, I have been trying to figure out what colors to use for my wedding. At first I just wanted to use purple but then my FI said he doesn't want purple he wants black, green and gold because hes from Jamaica and wants to bring the colors from the Jamaican flag into our wedding. Personally, I hate green and can't imagine seeing my bridesmaids in green dresses, so we came to a compromise and decided the girls can wear purple and the guys wear gold and we will use a lot of gold for the reception and accent with purple. I am just worried that it will look like a tacky 'Lakers' themed wedding. We are both huge Lakers fans but I don't want my wedding associated with that at all, I want it to look elegant. Do you think the purple and gold idea is bad? What were your colors and how did you blend them?
