I absolutely love fall and my favorite color is green, so I'm using an overall fall theme in terms of colors. Our wedding is going to be in September, and the ceremony will be outdoors in my family's vineyard, so we'll have plenty of the fall colors around us.
My bridesmaid dresses are a celadon green with a bit of a gold irridecence in them and I want to use reds, oranges and browns to accent. I'm not big on sprinkling leaves all over or using pumpkins and such, but am instead going to use the colors in the flowers I choose and linens and such. I love lilies, so I'm thinking of tiger lilies, roses, and calalilies possibly.
So, my advice to you would to either
A) use your favorite or your fiance's favorite color and find complements to it
B) if you don't have a favorite color, use your surroundings and the time of year as inspiration.
Hope this helps!
My only advice is pick a color that you can imagine beautiful flowers to go with! I had trouble finding flowers for my color scheme - turquoise & brown. (turquoise and brown flowers?!) Honestly, people don't REALLY notice your "wedding colors" unless you go really nuts with them. They will notice your flowers though!
I had the hardest time deciding on a color scheme, because I LOVE bright colors and I often go through phases of liking certain colors. When I finally came up with my color scheme (amethyst, robbin's egg blue, and celery green), I looked around my apartment and realized I had chosen colors that are very prominent in my living room (the blue and the green) and my wardrobe (the purple)! Look around you and see what colors you tend to gravitate towards in your home decor and clothes. That might help you to get some inspiration and narrow it down.
i agree with caramel & blushing! i LOVE color in general so it was so hard to narrow it down. what really helped was finding flowers that went with the various color schemes i would come up with. i also pulled together an inspiration board of each of the color palattes i liked until i found one that really sang to me.
i was against using red at the beginning of my search, but it ended up going beautifully with my scheme. and after i chose the color scheme (gold, white, chocolate brown & crimson red) i noticed those colors everywhere, like my guest bathroom. strange i know.
Think about personal touches you might want to incorporate into your wedding too and how that might play out in terms of colour. For example, Miss Petunia (I think) is wanting to incorporate Monopoly items into her wedding and it didn't really go with her original colours of pink and green. My fiance is a magician so we originally thought of using playing cards in the wedding decor somehow - that would have worked well with a red, black and white theme.
our main color will be dark red - the FI's favorite color is red, but that's just a coincidence. I was just trying to find dress colors that would look good across the board on my bridal party! i always thought i'd use a light blue but i didn't like how that would contrast with the colors. since i don't really have a color demanding theme (or a theme period...) i'm sticking with dark red.
my advice is make sure you can find a decent bridesmaids dress in one of the colors before you make any final descisions.
i picked a shade of moss green and had the HARDEST time finding a dress in it. it took me months and was really stressful.
Sometimes it doesn't have to be so complicated. I tried to have the pink/green combo. Then I couldn't get my invite envelopes to match so I changed to coral/lime.( Imagine I changed my colors based on an envelope!)
And then I decided just to "go tropical," (my wedding is in Jamaica) and not match too much at all, which means flowers in all tropical shades, bridesmaids in coral, me in white. I think coordinated is great. But it doesn't have to be so perfectly matched.
i found my bridesmaid's dress in a bridal magazine and knew that had to be the dress for my girls... so that dictated the color! I went for a color combo of moss/olivine (the dress color that inspired my wedding!), champagne and deep cranberry for my September wedding. I still love my colors, so I think I chose the right ones for me!Â
my favorite colors are blue and red... couldn't decide which one to stick with, so i decided to do both! i knew i wanted the red to be more of an accent, but i couldn't decide on which shade of blue for a long time. didn't want it to look like the 4th of july, y'kno? finally decided on an aqua accented with dark red. it's a nice change from the pastel and brown combo trend of the past 2 years. although, we're still doing some brown and ivory as base colors. theme...i dreamt of a fire and ice theme once upon a time that incorporated ice sculptures and fireworks in a winter wonderland setting with blue uplights and white draping... ummm, until we started talking about the budget of course ;) so, no real theme anymore other than the prominence of our ethnic traditions.
It was pretty simple for me- my favorite colors are pink, blue and purple. My wedding is October 20, so blue was out because it is not very fall-ish. Some of my bridesmaids do not look good in pink, so I was left with purple. I chose victorian lilac as my BM color and my florist will be putting small amounts of misty blue (which is more of a purple color than blue) in the bouquets of cream colored roses and mini- calla lillies to add that small splash of color. The same will be in mine as well. My advice is to start with yours and your FI favorites and go from there. Take into account the season, BM's skin tones, and flowers that you like. Not sure what type of budget you are on either but, a place like David's Bridal for your BM dresses will help too- they have some many styles in any color you can imagine! See what looks good on your maids and go from there! Good Luck!
Thanks for the great tips! I definitely find myself gravitating towards a light blue, light pink -- almost vintage muted colors. But I don't consider myself to be one of those country/romantic/shabby chic people. Oi. I am thinking I'll stick to those, but try and give it a modern look. Plus, I don't want it looking like a baby shower, because I don't want to think about babies for a LONG time! :)
I wanted to choose at least one color that would work really well with the skin tones of my four, dark-haired and pale bridesmaids. Luckily, a dark, rich purple looked great and was a color I really liked. Then, my FI choose the second color because it's his favorite: medium-light green. :D
my FI & I's favorite color is baby blue... since we are getting married in October we thought baby blue would be to springish/summerish.. so we opted for a turquoise and are accenting that with black. The girls are wearing turquoise, men are wearing all black with turquoise vests and our theme is bling... flowers are very white with turquoise bling... =) can't wait to see it all come together!
I tried to find a palate that hasn't been overdone. I also knew that I was not a "pastel" bride. My favorite color is green, his is blue, so I decided to go with A LOT of white, apple green, navy blue, and some punches of bright yellow and bright pink in for fun. That has been the one decision (besides saying "yes"!) that I have not looked back on and changed.
I am not really going with a color scheme. I know I want some orange and other bright colors, but I'm not doing "colors." It can be helpful to guide you in coordinating things, but isn't necessary. So pick what you like, as you've mentioned, and don't feel tied to it. By the time you round out your scheme (I just read Miss Bruschetta's post) you can have 5 or 6 colors to work with!
Like some of the ladies mentioned, I too like color a LOT! Our venue is outdoors with lots and lots of beautiful trees; very lush and green.
At the moment I am thinking yellow. However, I saw a wedding that was done at the same site with turquoise. Orange is nice too and good for October. But I love purple! *sigh*....see what I mean. I love color!
I just ended up knowing I loved purple and pink but didn't want a pink wedding...or a blue one (third/2nd tie fav) so I chose purple...a great wedding color! My wedding colors are now lilac, lavender and chocolate brown (but my FH says "dark purple, light purple, brown hehe)
I wanted an "old hollywood" wedding and decided the black, white, and crimson would be a classic design choice. I love vintage and vintage-inspired concepts so the supper club, jazzy theme was a natural and fun fit! ;-)
i pulled my fiance over to the paint section, yes the paint section at the hardware store. then i asked him to pick from the samples, you know the little cards, to choose what colors he likes and then i picked my color and i am making them work together. i personally dont like the shade he is set on but what can I do? I am working with it. (MY COLORS ARE OCEAN BLUE AND SEAFOAM GREEN, MY COLOR IS THE GREEN)
our designer helped "guide" us to ours...
in our first meeting, she took us to drinks to get to know us a bit better, and then asked a series of questions something like this:
what is your favorite season
fave time of day
fave movie
fave color
what color makes you feel warm/cold
what color makes you think of family
do you want your wedding to be: intimate, romantic, modern, classic, traditional, edgy, etc
large or small guest list
what does your house look like
what is your fave outfit
etc.
after answering a ton of questions, she nailed it!
late summer, evening, fun and spirited, but black tie, super amazing food, vibrant flowers, tons of detailed touches, amazing paper products, etc. it was so cool to see her generate basically our entire wedding design and just nail it right on the head the first time around. it made making choices later down the road SOOOO much easier!
I have always wanted to get married on the beach and so has he so that part was easy...we are just incorporating the "beach theme" into the reception. My favorite flower is daisies and my favorite color is yellow so that part is working out perfectly. The downside? His favorite color is burgandy. My family (especially my kids) are HUGE Gator fans (college football if you don't follow). Now to most this may not seem like a huge issue. But yellow and burgandy can also be construed as marron and gold ... our arch enemies the dreaded FSU Seminoles. Sooooo...I am trying to figure out how to incorporate his favorite color with mine without people thinking we chose FSU colors. I know this seems ridiculous to some but trust me...when your family loves college football as much as mine does, it matters! LOL!
I found this picture on the knot before I got engaged (my friend had just gotten engaged so we were looking at wedding stuff). It pretty much inspired my wedding. My colors are dark grey and light pink and I'm have candelabras on half of the tables and a low arrangment with light pink roses on the other half.
My wedding color is purple with black and ivory damask accents. Purple has been a long time favorite color of mine so I knew that would be one of the colors. I also have a black/white perspective of everything so I thought the black/ivory damask accent was fitting. I also wanted to make sure that I was able to carry the color theme throughout the ceremony and reception.
I went to the sitethatshallnotbenamed and looked at real weddings to get ideas on what colors I liked. I decided I wanted shabby chic inspired colors, so I have a sort of muted blue, green, peach thing going on.

I'm having such a hard time choosing a color or a theme. How did you guys come to decide these things?
