We all know the stats regarding coloured diamonds and the fact that they are incredibly rare and ridiculously costly.
Having said that, if you did have the option to have a coloured diamond engagement ring, would you or would you prefer a classic colourless/near colourless stone?
And what colour would you pick? The more 'common' (and realistically affordable) yellows and browns or (if your hubby-to-be was an billionaire oil tycoon or computer software developer a la Bill Gates) the much rarer reds or purples?
Just interested in seeing people's opinions on these uber rare rocks

Oh, if I was a bazillioniare, sure. I quite like pink and purple colored stones.
But in reality I like having a colorless stone for an e-ring since it goes with everything. If I had a colored stone, I'd feel like I needed to match my outfit with it.
And I cannot justify the cost of diamonds, so I have a Moissanite.
@throughthebarricades: Oooh, lucky gal. Will it be a vivid coloured yellow or a lighty, buttery shade? The Tiffany yellow bezet rings are amazing. :)
@gelamac: I know right? I couldn't stop staring at the blue-green stone. If only... :P
@Arshim: I am hoping for this one: http://www.tiffany.com/Shopping/Item.aspx?fromGrid=1&sku=29709807&mcat=148210&cid=649502&search_params=s+5-p+1-c+649502-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+
It is so sparkly and beautiful in real life *swoons*
@throughthebarricades: I can only imagine what that looks like in real life. The fire must be blinding. I really hope you get it. *fingers crossed*
Not for me - I love my colorless diamond :) But I think they are very pretty, and love seeing them on other ladies!
@Arshim: Thanks!! I really hope so too *sigh*
We don't have a Tiffany's in my city so we went to the one in Scottsdale AZ when we were on holiday... I went to look at round brilliant white diamonds and the yellows caught my eye (I've always had a soft spot for them) and it was just beautiful!
I love diamonds that are light yellow but non fancy. I'd love something in the Q-Z range (in a colorless diamond halo with a pave band!) but I'm having a hard time convincing my SO. He likes more traditional rings.

YES! Ugh, I wish I was on my other laptop... I had the best diamond website, all different kinds of colors. I had no idea you could get a blue grey diamond (my favorite color). They are beautiful and look completely different than gemstones. LOVE!
Ha! I just saw this- computer software developer, lol, he is... Oh and look at that, he just came in here to talk to me about the diagrams he created for the interface of the program he works on.
I've been really enchanted with grey diamonds lately.

It's a strange interest, since neither grey nor diamonds are my style. But I think they're captivating.
For an engagement ring, I really like either sapphires, or blue diamonds. I like the symbology of truth. I'm also partial to violet and black diamonds, though, too. Pink diamonds are nice, but I don't think I'd want pink for an engagement ring. I definitely prefer colored diamonds to clear ones (except for yellow or champagne ones). The grey ones, if they have good clarity, and are a violet-type grey, it can be really pretty.
@MrsVanilla: OMG- it's not but I am obsessed now! I am on the phone with my mom and literally gasped when I saw this picture.
It's some site that is real official, I promise to look it up... after I drool on this new site you gave me :)
I really like champagne and cognac diamonds, and even brown with orange undertones. These are usually the more affordable ones, too!
My main stone is a moissanite, but my sidestones are champagne, cognac & chocolate diamonds...all set in yellow gold, yum!
This one is super affordable!- http://www.fancydiamonds.net/view_diamonds/10016.htm
I have a black diamond, exactly what I wanted and I love it! It seems to shine more than a onyx (I think that;s the black stone) and it's unique, I love it
I love the blue grey diamonds and black diamonds.
But I have a moissanite.
@MrsVanilla: You should check out JTV! They have grey moissanite at really affordable prices right now. I just got my round brilliant and heart moissanite in the "Eclipse" shade, and they are really steely and gorgeous.
@starla: Those are really beautiful! I just checked JTV and I can't believe those prices! I'm tempted to buy one of those mystery moissanite parcels...
I like the colourless classic diamonds for centerstones, but if I was a bazillionaire I would totally get dark blue side diamonds like the one in The Titanic. I have a white gold band and colourless diamonds. I love it! It goes with everything! And it's so sentimental to me that it's actually quite difficult to think of having anything else now that I've had it for more than 2 years. It means so much to me.
Here's the website- http://www.langerman-diamonds.com/
It used to be more official, they changed their url... but enjoy anyway :)
@starla: Never would have thought of grey but those are great!
I like colorless because it goes with everything. But otherwise, my favorites would be yellow, champagne or maybe a bluish grey
@MrsVanilla: :O So beautiful. I love grey and blue grey I would have any and all of those. I feel icky about mined stones though. They need a select your shade lab stone company!
OMG I LOOOOVE naturally vivid fancy colored diamonds!
I WISH we were rich enough to be able to have considered other diamond colors other than white. We could get a beautiful white one, but to get a colored one, it would have had to be artificially colored, or very poor clarity, cut, poor color, etc. So, white it was.
I actually see white as a color, and a nice one at that, but if they were all the same price, white would have maybe been my third or fourth choice. One benefit white diamond has is that it's the archetypal stone we associate with marriage, so that's a nice warm feeling about it.
By the way, is there any chance that Priscilla Chan's "ruby" is really a red diamond? Anyone know? I couldn't find any clear image of it.
...also... I wanted to add, one thing that scares me about colored diamonds is that I heard sometimes the method used to artificially color them (irradiation) can leave the diamond radioactive itself! I don't know if that's always the case, but it makes me cautious around colored diamonds in jewellery stores. I'll save my xray dose for when I really need to get one.
I would only want a colorless diamond for an ering since it goes with everything. I would love a teal/blue diamond for a RHR.
Coloured diamonds all the way. I don't really like the colouless ones unless they're sidestones to a coloured one. They're just too common and boring. Gem stones are nice too, but lack that sparkle (minus moissy). And there is something very attractive about rare stones. Partly because it makes your ring unique.
Not sure whether I'd pick a natural pink/purple/blue or green if I had the option.
@Arshim: I love them and can't just pick one! I love yellows, browns, blues, pinks, oranges... pretty much any colour of diamond as long as it's natural. I really don't like the dyed diamonds.
Love the colour of this one! Reminds me of a certain beach in Dubai. Warm, glistening and perfect..
