Quick question…when you combine accounts after you get married, you both have to be present at the bank for this, right? Darling Husband couldn’t just go and handle this? We wanted to do this on Saturday but I have a job interview that overlaps when the bank is open. I would love to just have him go and handle it, but I have a feeling we both have to be there. Anyone have experience with this?

You have to be there to prove your identity. Otherwise, anyone could just go to the bank and say they wanted to combine finances with you, then steal your money.

We have discussed that we are not doing this… Each will have our own money, and we will give each other money for things, agree one person pays a cert bill, or we will open a joint account and then when the time comes divide everything in half, put that much money in the account and pay it from there

Both people need to be there in order to provide information and verify that they are who they say they are. If you are opening a new account, most banks do that online though so you don’t actually have to be there to do it.

@MrsSaltWaterTaffy: oh I didnt know about opening one online. I’ll tell him about it and see if we can just do that. He just has to add a checking account for me. We will play around with it. It’s not a big deal if we do it this weekend or next, I just think that he wanted to get it over with.
