Hey ladies, I plan to stop taking birth control pills this summer. I am not TTC just yet, but I want to give my body some time to be off the pills and I also want to see what my cycle does – I have never had normal periods when off birth control so I want to see if my cycle is still completely wacky.
The question is this: I have two packs of pills left, and I sort of want to take them back-to-back (skipping the placebo week and skipping my period) because my next period is due when I’ll be traveling on a big cross-country trip. I’ve only very rarely skipped the placebo week to avoid a period (have only done it when absolutely necessary).
Could taking two pill packs in a row have negative consequences for going off the pill immediately after? Like could it confuse my body and make my cycles even more likely to be irregular? I suppose I should ask a doctor but I wanted to throw it out there just in case any of you lovely ladies have experience with this.

Obviously the best answer is “ask your doctor”, but I used to take Seasonique which is basically the same thing as doing back to back pills. Actually, when I switched insurance and they no longer paid for Seasonique, my doctor told me I could go about taking back to back pills if I wanted.
A lot of people do it, but you can have break through bleeding still. The first year I was on Seasonique I had break through bleeding randomly. It was never heavy, just a few light days. You could easily have this since it’s your first time going back to back on pills.
Going off the pill is so different for everyone. I spent 7 years on the pill, with half of them (if not more) on Seasonique. The last 2 years I’ve been on Loestrin 24FE. I went off in January, had a period right after, another in Feb, and haven’t had one since. Actually, I’m pregnant now, completely unexpected since I haven’t had a cycle in months and I assumed I wasn’t going to ovulate (ovulated on like CD108 it turns out). Some people are affected by skipping periods, some aren’t. It’ll just depend on you.
If you want to do it, you can do it, or check with your doctor. If it was me, I’d probably just do it if I wanted to keep taking the pill. I still have another pack of mine left, but never bothered to finish it.

@snoie: thank you for sharing your experience. i have done the back-to-back pill pack thing before and didn’t have any breakthrough bleeding. i will probably try to get the doc before i leave for my trip and see what she says. still it’s good to hear how it’s worked for other ladies though! thanks!

I had bleeding on Seasonique too, but did not have bleeding when I cycled my birth control pills. Check with the doc to be sure, but you should be fine.

I just did the same thing and have had no ill effects.

I did exactly what you are saying- took my last two packs back to back. I do get spotting when I do it, but it meant I didn’t have my period for vacation so whatever. I feel like every time you get your period it ‘resets’ itself, so I don’t think it had any effect on how long it took to regulate coming off the pill.
