My FI and I had an orientation at the church this past weekend. I had no idea that we were going to take the FOCCUS test! I was so nervous when they told us at the end of the orientation they were going to give us the FOCCUS test then give the results to our sponsor couple. We will be going over the test with a sponsor couple and then with a priest as well. It seems like a lot of work. They gave us a huge binder of timelines, classes and dates. All the answers to our questions were in this nifty binder. Readings, songs, optional vows… you name it, it had it all! I was glad that we started this process early. We have exactly 18 months to go and get it all done but we can’t lock in a day with the church until we actually talk to a priest and pay the church fees up front. I have to send for my sacramental records so we can have our meeting with the priest. I don’t know what I would do if our day is already booked. Did you have to change your wedding date becasue someone else had already taken it? or didi you go find another church that had the day available?

congrats! one thing done, 34507346 to go! haha… we did our FOCCUS test back in December and are going over it the first week of March (FH lives in another state, so it takes a while to plan these things) with our sponsor couple. I was able to book the church right away though – we haven’t paid anything yet. maybe yours only does it a year in advance? our priest is actually performing another wedding at a different location that night, but he’ll still be available for our time – something i was initially worried about! that’s a bummer that they wont like… pencil you in at least.

@tinarenee77: Book your church first! Book your church first! My advice to all Catholic brides would be to book the church first. Since we can’t just get married wherever, we are a lot less flexible on that. Luckily, the date I wanted was open, but the church made it very clear that we had to give them an option of days and times.

that’s the problem. they won’t let us book the date until we have a meeting with the priest and pay first. We can’t have a meeting until we have all our sacramental records in hand for the priest to have a meeting with us. too many loops!

The good news is you have 18 months! Lol, just breathe! We did it all in under 12… you’re ok….

We made or will make it through it all in about 9 months. It’s doable.

You can do it! We just took our test and will meet with a counselor next week. Our church is a little more liberal so we didn’t have to do anything but meet with the priest one time to book the date. Then we’ll meet with him again in May.
Good luck! Eightten months is plenty of time to find a date that works for you and that the church has available.

While we were looking at venues and deciding on dates, I called the church to find out their availability on the date we were looking at. Then I called our church (15 months ahead) and they were able to “pencil us in” and said we were super EARLY in planning. We met with the Deacon for our FOCCUS test appointments in July 2010 (a year out). At that time we put down a $200 deposit. We have met with our priest a few times. Now we are actually going to our Engaged Encounter weekend away this weekend. And we are meeting with the church’s wedding coordinator and our priest in a few weeks. I think if you start planning super early, you will have a choice on your preferred dates. 18 months is PLENTY of time! Even at 15 months, we had plenty of time!
