Hi, Bees –
Over the past day or two I have noticed a faint smell of burning rubber or plastic in our laundry room. It seems to be coming from our (older, top-loading Amana) washing machine. It’s not very strong – I have a pretty sensitive nose, and I had to check a couple of times to make sure it wasn’t just my imagination – but any burning smell coming from an appliance is kind of disturbing.
From what I’ve found online, it sounds like the most likely cause is friction from a belt that is slipping or worn. I was wondering if any Bees have experience with this. Is it something we might be able to fix as a DIY? If you had a repairman come fix it, how expensive was it? Do I need to stop using the washer immediately, or can I risk continuing to use it if I keep an eye on it? (We have a month-old baby in the house, and we cloth diaper, so the ability to do laundry is pretty crucial.) Also, FWIW, all the loads of wash I’ve been running over the past couple of days when I’ve noticed the smell have been on the small side, so it isn’t a question of the machine being overloaded.
Thanks for any help you can offer!
