Inspired by another condom thread, I've always been curious about how often a condom really breaks. We've never had one break - and, I wonder if particular brands are more prone to breaking than others.
We don't want kids and are currently only using condoms, It's always in the back of my mind: hoping there isn't a random break when I'm ovulating. I keep figuring we are playing russian roulette, of sorts - where 1 out of 100 will break (or some varying odds like that).
Thoughts?
EDIT: for those that experienced it - were you using a 'brand' name?
once. . .we drove to the drugstore and got plan B. Scared the crap out of me.
Yep! A couple times. I was using both condoms and BC pills at the time so wasn't worried.
Once. Because we were using a cheap brand in college. lol. Did what PP did and went and got Plan B asap. I was minorly freaking out for a few days, but all was well. I've never had a quality brand break though.
Yes.
1st time wasn't on BC and ran out to get Plan B
2nd time was on BC, so I didn't worry.
I have had two breaks with Trojans, and a couple of slip outs. I am on BC though and am religious in taking it so I didn't worry.
I found a statistic that said that 4 out of 1000 latex condoms break (0.4%). However, pregnancies can happen without a condom breaking. With perfect use, 3 in 100 women will become pregnant while using condoms and with typical use, 14 in 100 women will become pregnant.
@EvaBostonTerrier: I figured those pregnancy stats were based on breakage. Stupid question - but how exactly can you get pregnant while using a condom without a break??
@oracle: I'm not an expert in this area, but I think part of it woud be improper use. I would suspect problems such as slipping out (wrong size condom?), condom coming off while in the female, not putting the condom on before starting intercourse (i.e. waiting until closer to orgasm), etc.
@EvaBostonTerrier: thanks - I figured that as well but thought the wording of 'perfect' use would imply no slip-up's (pun intended) :)
Once so far but then again we haven't been doing 'it' with a condom as long. (I got off B.C. and we started condoms.) I can literally count the amount of times we've done it with a condom if I really try. Haha! Ours was 1 in 12th out of I'd guesstimate 20.
It was a 'brand' name which now i cannot remember. I think it was Trojan. However, since we always pull out as well before he is cuming, the condom broke when he came. The cum exceeded it and it popped. I was not a happy camper!
Fortunately it did not happen inside me. But I did get scared that perhaps there was a little tear before which just spread out. But I am not preggo, so *phew!*
I personally don't trust condoms by themselves at all. Had quite a few break over the years (different people and different brands-yes, all common name brands). It can definitely happen!!
I've had it break once. And I will be the first to knock Plan B. It doesn't always work. Even if you take it the right way. Trust me.
I have had a few breakages - with different brands (all "premium" brands) and different partners ... which is why I have always used 2 forms of birth control!
It didnt' break, but I've had it come off. For medical reasons, I was off of bc at the time.
Thank God for Plan B.
never had one break but had one or two slip offs. Plan B to the rescue.
Ok, this might be a dumb question, but I've always wondered how you know if one breaks. Is it an obvious feeling for him? I know a lot of times, FI will go to the bathroom to throw it away and doesn't turn the light on, so I wonder if it's something you have to inspect or if you just know if/when it happens.
@Jaynee: Well if there's a lot more liquid than there usually is... he will usually know by the weight of the condom as well.
@Jaynee: In some instances they can feel the moment of breakage (but I am told it is a subtle feeling), but if you don't know until the end it is because the semen has escaped and there is extra fluid, and the condom is empty or near empty.
@Jaynee: Usually it causes a pretty big tear. It's happened to us a couple of times and each time we've both felt it sort of pop or snap. I would imagine that sometimes a small hole could go unnoticed though.
I had a condom break in college - I was on BC, but I also got Plan B as a backup. It was with my now husband. I was NOT ready for a child. It was the only breakage we have had in our 6 years together using condoms and BC.
Broke once about 5 years ago, went to planned parenthood and got the plan b pill.
The thing with condoms is that so many people use it incorrectly. If used 100% correctly I think it's about 99.99% safe.
It has happened a few times to me, but I was always on BC, so didn't worry much about it.
DH and I had a condom break once in college. I don't know the brand but it wasn't a cheap one or anything - DH always bought common name brands. I was also on the pill though so we weren't really worried.
We have had several break.. but there turned out to be ummm dryness issue. And we tried the super thin kind, and ALL Of them broke.
Twice, but they never broke whilst having sex. Hands without lotion are much less forgiving than vaginas.
(We never use the "extra thin" kind. If you're going to use a barrier method, use an actual barrier!)
@Jaynee: Both times for us, the condom has been completely shredded. Like, boom, not like a little pin hole. It'll probably also be lighter.
For some reason every time we tried to use Durex they have broken. After the second time they were all thrown into the garbage and we switched brands. No more issues :)
Ummm.... where is the 'edit' button now!?
I want to edit my post to state that the broken condom I had was a Durex. Not Trojan. None of the Trojans broke. That was my first pack. My second pack was Durex, out of which 1 broke. (Pack of 10, each time.)
We usually rely on my BC pill and don't use condoms, but for the year I wasn't on it or if I was taking antibiotics or something, we've never had one break to our knowledge. We usually use the thin non-latex ones as well. They've all been brands that you'd find at CVS, nothing generic or anything. I've heard the free NYC condoms suck and break a lot, so we never used those.
@Sasha2011: you can only edit within an hour of when you posted it. After that, the option disappears.
I had one break, and one slip. The one that broke was the Trojan extra thin kind. Never used those again!
i've had about 3 condoms break and two slip off... all were trojan. i've been using lifestyles skin. they're great! they're not made of latex or animal skin. they feel great and protect from pregnancy and STDs
I imagine if guys are rough putting them on, it can cause cause breaks later by putting teeny stresses into the rubber.
