I think the sham is like the ‘skirt’ of the bed, going under the mattress to kind of hang down over the side and make it so you can’t see under the bed?  I THINK lol

A duvet covers the comforter, this of it as a giant pillowcase for the comforter. The comforter actually goes inside the duvet cover. A sham is the fancy pillow case that goes on the pillow. Generally if you have your pillow covered with a sham you do not sleep on top of the sham, you would either remove the sham and have a pillow with a pillow case underneath or you would have pillows covered with shams that are decorative. A bed skirt goes between the mattress and the box spring or between the mattress and the platform part of the bed depending on what type you have. The bed skirt hides the space between the the bed and the floor.

I am the queen of bedding. we have a mattress pad covering our mattress. The fitted sheet covering that. Then the flat sheet is on top of the fitted sheet. Then we have a down comforter that is covered by a duvet. We also have some decorative pillows covered with shams that we do not sleep on. We have 3 Euro pillows (large square ones that are covered with sham, also decorative. We have two pillows that have pillow cases on that we sleep with. All the decorative pillows in shams are tossed aside.

I hope this makes sense

A sham is a pillow case. A duvet cover is the same concept as a pillow case, but it covers the comforter. They’re great because you can change the style of the bedding without having to change the comforter.

Also, when someone uses a duvet, its because they have a plain white comforter (usually down) and they use the duvet (cover). If you buy a decorative comforter, you dont need a duvet. You dont buy both in the same pattern.

The pillow sham (piloow case cover) is for decoration purposes only, not to sleep on.
