This is my first time posting but I have read through a bunch of the posts on these boards. I bought a diamond for my gf and now I am looking for a setting for it. Its a 2 CT, H color and I was thinking of setting it in a brushed platinum solitaire.
Although a solitaire is supposed to be simple and classic, I would love to have a bit of contemporary touch to it. Do you have any suggestions for contemporary/modern solitaires?
Also, I came across the pictured ring and I really like it. The narrowing of the ring at the head makes it look really modern and slick IMO. Can you help me place it? Do you know who makes it? I would love to just buy it rather than getting it made custom.

@excitingtimes: First of all, lucky lady! Second, your photo didn’t attach, would you mind trying again?

Nevermind! My computer just took awhile to load the photo.
You could try Blue Nile. One of my bridesmaids just got engaged and her Fiance got the ring from Blue Nile. It’s gorgeous and looks like good quality.
Here’s one that might work: http://www.bluenile.com/platinum-cathedral-solitaire-engagement-ring-setting_25663

Have the jeweller set the 4 claws at the points of the compass instead?

@excitingtimes: Even though you don’t want to get something made custom, it’s not as scary as it sounds. It is likely the easiest and cheapest, since they will just be able to pick the right size for the ring. I would take that picture to your local jeweler and let them know that’s what you want.
That’s what I did- it took about 2 weeks and cost me $300 for everything, and now I have a place right in town where I can take my ring to be fixed, cleaned, etc for free. * mine also has the narrowing you like, but a little more subtle. I honestly think this is the way to go!
ETA For something like that, it wouldn’t even necessarily be custom. You would pick the shank and the basket, and he would just put them together. Same as ordering off the internet, but with a book and maybe some real examples instead

@excitingtimes: Whenever I think contemporary, I think of this designer’s rings:
Just browse some of his things, they are phenomenal.

Wow! First of all, I am the lucky one as she is awesome!
Thanks for the feedback and you are right, I think that is the Birks collection. Cool!
Keep the ring photos coming, they are opening my mind!

@excitingtimes: The narrowing of the shank is called tappered. Do you know your GF’s style? Modern/contemporary jewelery is not my style, and I was just wondering if she told you something that made you think of this for her, or if she already wears modern jewelery now.
Here’s a few from google images

So I took the Birk’s photos and sent it to a custom ring place in my town. Obviously they don’t want to just copy what other designers have made but do you have any sense on how sensitive they are to that?

I have a ring that tapers that way and I LOVE it!!! It’s also a cathedral setting. Very simple, but beautiful and elegant. Diamond is 1.7ct round brilliant, I have size 6 finger
