hmm. maybe it was just a walmart thing? my sister took hers into walgreens and they had them printed in an hour!
is it on a cd? can you just go to one of the kiosks and do it yourself?
Grr.... just chalk this up to WalMart being anal and PITAs. If a DVD of images with printing rights was given to you by your photographer, you are more than able to print them wherever you choose. Wal-Mart tends to be real sticklers about this though, so that's probably why you were having a hard time. Do you have a letter or anything from the photographer giving you permission to print?? This can sometimes help. Really though, I'd just try ot print someplace like WalGreens that isn't so picky.
@Sunshinebride, the thing about using the kiosk is that you still need to hand you images to a Walmart employee for them to package. Sometimes you'll still end up in the same spot.
EDIT: I just wanted to quick mention two things:
- just because you have a DVD/CD of images, doesn't mean you have printing rights; there are many reasons why a photographer might give you a disk of images not intending for you to be able to print them
- by making it difficult for you to print, Walmart is really just protecting themselves
We ran into that problem too-they would only print it if we had written permission-we didn't have the written permission, b/c she e-mailed it to us so we could use it for the newspaper announcements. My mom was so mad!
OOo i was worried about this, too--my photographer just handed me over the CDs with no paperwork indicating we had purchased the negatives. My friend received a notice from her photographer--it says that copyrighted photos have now been released for printing on this CD.
Walmart is pretty uptight about this. What about snending them off to a quality photo lab? The photos will turn up much much better.
I'm not sure I understand. Digital photos don't have "negatives"; only print photos do. Did you buy the copyrights for the photos? Usually your photographer will send you a letter or some kind of proof of copyright when you purchase it. You'll need that proof in order to print pictures. I think even websites like Shutterfly have a disclaimer saying something about how the pictures you are printing are yours and you have full copyright privileges, or something to that effect. If the pictures look even somewhat professional, print shops will always ask for proof of copyright before printing. I think it's a major liability if they don't, since they could be sued for infringement from the photographer.
My advice is to go back and read your contract. Does it say you are getting a cd of so many pictures? Or does it say you actually will have the copyrights to all of the pictures on the cd? If it says "copyrights" you need to contact your photographer and get some kind of proof in writing that you own the copyrights to all those pictures. Once you get that proof, just bring the letter in with you to Wal-Mart and you should have no problem having them make prints for you.
Thanks--I wondered if it might just be a Wal-Mart issue. I'm going to try to get written permission from our photographer.
Mom lives in a rather rural area and Wal-Mart is her only option since she's not a big online person.
Ugh.
@Mrs. Spring-- our contract refers to them as digital negatives, I definitely thought that was confusing too! I'm going to contact the photographer and see what she says.
Good luck, HannahT! Hopefully, your photographer can straighten it all out for you!
My photographer gave me a CD with a written letter saying that I had rights to print the pictures. I didn't have any problems printing pictures at Walgreens though, they didn't ask me for the rights at all.
Don't know about this but we got ours printed at Walmart and the quality was horrible. Other people have printed them off at like Wahlgreens and CVS and they've been better but they were really quite awful color quality at Walmart.
I have heard that about Walmart's photo quality too. I think they are on the lower end of processing for places like that compared to Target, Walgreens, etc.
Update: Our photographer is going to send us a written letter of permission. I hope that will be enough at Wal-Mart--although I hear you on the quality!
A written letter would definitely help. Walmarts have gotten in trouble with this type of thing in the past b/c people think they're "just Walmart" and won't care. If the photos printed ANYWHERE don't look right, just ask them to reprint. Some places will go in and change color in a photo, and you have to ask them not to. Plus, they're supposed to calibrate their machines and I bet they let that slide if they have a ton of photos to print.
Hi...as a photographer, I provide a signed personal use copyright relesase to all my clients in case there are any questions. If I can recommend one thing for you, keep in mind that where you get the photos printed does have an impact on the way they come out. Not sure if the images are edited or not. However, I recommend using www.mpix.com to all my clients. They provide great printing at a much higher level of both service and quality....
online and great pricing.
good luck!

Hey bees-- I'm somewhat confused about a photography issue and hoping someone can help.
Our photography package included all digital negatives on DVD. I've ordered images off Shutterfly and other photo-sharing sites with no problem. However my mom brought the DVD into Wal-Mart and they refused to print the images, even though she told them we had purchased the negatives.
Has anyone run into this issue? Any thoughts on what to do?
