hehe, small price to pay for having a body I always wanted :P lol, I kid, I kid. No, luckily, it was tight, but it was definitely wearable!!! I've lost about 17 pounds now too so hopefully they won't have to Cinch it quite so much... but I loooove it!!!

Love it! A very good friend of mine is plus sized and for her birthday shindig a wardrobe friend of ours laced her into a corset. She looked like a size 12 (UK sizing) and she's normally an 18/20! She was so pleased. And she could still drink and be merry which is always a plus ;)

That was the advice my friend said before I shopped- GET A CORSET STYLE BACK dress! It happened that the one I picked is corseted and let me tell you, I could go up or down pracitcally a size and it would be NO PROBLEM. I love how it pulls you in where you need it... it feels so much more made-to-fit and supportive than the zip-up or button-up dresses! Great for hourglass gals for SURE!

Holy Crap!  My dress laces up in the back but I don't think it's like a corset really...  I'll have to get one for underneath! LOL

I don't have a picture of me with a corset in a gown, but I do Ren Faires and Medieval reenactment. I loooooove a good corset. Although, I like mine for bust support more than shaping, when laced properly I can breath and dance, have an awesome shape, and can jump around with no jiggling, and it's way more comfy than a bra.

Wow, that looks great! So does the corset mean your dress is a smaller than your usual size?

@Ashley, thanks! My wedding dress was about two sizes smaller than my normal street size. However, I found that with most dresses I tried on, corset or not. Guess I got lucky!!

Okay, this is a really interesting topic...one in which I'm entirely unfamiliar!  My dress is an Anne Barge dress size 10.  I ordered online.  I knew it would end up being a street size 6 in bridal land.  Well, surprise, I have now become a size 6 (high end of 6), but the back is like 4 inches apart still! SO so disheartening.  So now I'm thinking that this thing must be a size 4 in real life.  I'm shooting on losing 10 to 12 more pounds, hoping this will eliminate the gap in the back.

Okay, so number 1....will a corset change my life with regard to this issue?

And then, number 2....do you think dropping 12 pounds will close the 4 inch gap in the back of the dress?

Thanks for your pearls of wisdom! :)

I also purchased a corset type dress and think it makes my middle look fab from all angles I look so slim - but now I am freaking out about the back bulge that may show - anyone else having the same fears??

Wow!  Thanks for the tip!  I'm now about an 18/20 (lost 70 pounds, woo!) and was thinking I needed to lose about 60 more pounds.  I wasn't going to go dress shopping until I did, but now I feel like maybe I can go shopping!  Yay!

I've been a huge fan of corsets for a looong time.  They bring out the curves so nicely and to be honest, I love how they feel. ;-) Just a tip if you guys get a real corset (not the flimsy "looks" corset)...wear it as often as you can so it shapes to your body.  I guarentee it'll become super comfortable once it forms to your body!

Where do you gals buy your corsets? I can't really think of anywhere that I could try one on to make sure I like the fit before I buy it.

Toffee -- I generally buy mine from ebay these days, mid grade (between $80-150) but I know my size and the cut that looks best on me.  I'd suggest looking for a corset maker in your area or google the SCA in your area...there's people there that make corsets as a hobby.  Just be prepared to shell out some money for a proper corset.

yum, love corsets. My dress is gonna be an actual corset and a skirt. One of the girls i used to work with recently set up business as a Corsetiere and i have been lusting after them for months so i am gonna have one for my wedding day!!! (and it will double up nicely for a boudoir shoot!)

Check her out, she'l ship to the USA with no problems, totally amazing

I tried on one with a corset at DB (they didn't have the actual dress I wanted to try on, so I just tried one that was similar, kinda) and there's no way I'm not doing a corset! It gave me a very pretty waist, which is something I was sincerely worried about. It was slightly too small, but I can see if it's the correct size, that it would help a lot.

I'm finding this thread a bit late, but I have to echo the sentiment: corsets are awesome!  I'm super-curvy and I never felt better than while wearing a corset dress.  I ended up narrowing my dress search to lace-ups only.  No zippers allowed!  I've worn zippered dresses before (as BM) and by the reception I was constantly yanking up the dress.  A corset can just be cinched in a bit as it loosens.

As for where to find them... as a designer line, I found Maggie Sottero had many more corsets than other designers.  There were several at David's Bridal, too.

Here are two photos of my dress.

Wow you guys you/re all making me reconsider my so far choice of a one shoulder, zipped, v relaxed looking dress! I'd always assumed the corset style dress would:

    a) restrict choice of styles

    b) restrict breathing/eating/drinking/burping - let's be honest here!

    c) propel fat over and under - this I really do not want.

What's the consensus on the displaced/bulging out elsewhere-fat issue?

@aunt pol: One of the nice things about the corsets is that it can be tightened and loosened as you want.  One of my friends who wore a corset style had it pulled really tight for the ceremony and pictures then loosened it a bit for the reception/dinner.  Given my experience with zippered dresses starting to fall down after a few hours, I expect I might need a little tightening.  We'll see.

As for propelling fat over... it's a valid point, and one I'm going to be watching out for, because I don't want it either and sometimes I do see it in my dress.  I don't have a perfect solution yet.  One of the downsides of a corset is that you really do need someone to help you dress... I can't lace it up by myself, so I need someone else around to help me test ways to lace it and reduce fat spill.  (Fiance doesn't count--he doesn't want to see it until the wedding day.)  My thought process is this: mine laces from the top downward.  If the topmost area is left the loosest, I think it could help will spillage.  And the waist is where I want it the tightest anyway.

    Wow! You look great!

I tried on some dresses with corset backs, and I really loved them. The first place I tried on one the person who did the lacing didn't do it correctly, and I had back cleavage!!! Yuck!!  But when I tried one at another store, they laced it properly and it looked gorgeous. Unfortunately, we're having a destination elopement wedding, and I'll have to dress myself... Kind of hard to lace up a dress by yourself, so I got a dress with a zipper!!

My dress has a corset underneath!  Plus the full skirt/slip underneath is binding as well and the corset goes over it.  I am fully tied in!  Especially when the corset top of the dress is tied together in the back.  Very nicely done!  I'm a 22 and it makes all the difference to me!
