How much did you pay to attend a destination wedding?

We have friends who are planning a destination wedding this September. The location has not been 100% decided (as of right now its Jamica but it could change). I found out on the weekend that attending will probably cost us $1600 each. As far as I know this includes flight and hotel accomodations but I'm not really sure how long this is for.

Is this a lot of money to spend on attending a destination wedding?

My fiance and I are saving right now for our own wedding which is this August 27th and are looking into honeymoon ideas. We were considering attending this wedding and having it our honeymoon as well but I think that for both of us to pay $1600.00 is pretty expensive and I think that it is hurricane season there in September as well. I`m not really sure what to do!

I just had a destination wedding in Puerto Rico over Thanksgiving weekend and I don't know exactly how much each of my guests paid to get/stay there, but I would say that $1600 for each of you is a lot. Are you sure it's not for the both of you together? Since you would be sharing a hotel room and it is an off season, so plane tickets shouldn't be that much, I wouldn't think. Is the bride telling you you have to stay in specific place? I secured a special rate for my guests at my wedding hotel, but also suggested other places and most of my guests ended up staying where they wanted to stay (and at rates they wanted to pay).

As a side note, yes, Sept. is hurricane season, but I think the past couple of years the weather has been pretty decent and there haven't been any major hurricanes (but that's just another reason why it shouldn't be so expensive).

Thanks for the reply.  From what I understood when I was talking to her it was $1600 per person! I really should talk to her and find out for certain though because we will have to be planning what we are going to do soon! I don't think any other places will be suggested as I think they are looking into specific rates at their hotel only so they can get their accomodations for free.

If you really want to go and you want it as your honeymoon, then I would just do a little travel research (I like kayak.com for getting a good idea of what things cost). My guess is that you could probably get some great package deals for that time of year for less than $1600/person and if she asks why you're not staying at the wedding hotel, you have your honeymoon (and needing some alone time with your new hubby) as an excuse.

    : )

Check out airfare on Spirit Airlines. They have flights from select cities to Montego Bay

It really depends on several factors:

    Length of stay

    All-inclusive vs. traditional hotel

    Activities included

With a little bit more information, I am sure that people can tell you whether you are paying a fair price.

There are several factors that determine whether you are paying a reasonable price or not. May be you can provide a few more details.

    Will it be an all-inclusive?

What is the name of the hotel? (I know many in Jamaica)

Are activities included in the cost?

    Is airfare included?

That seems like a little high for off-season.  I would guess for a weeks stay at an all inclusive resort including airfaire and transfre you should be looking at about 1300-1400 each.  For our guests a weeks stay and airfare is running them between 900-1300 depending on the room they choose.

Seems a little high my guests are paying roughly $1000-1300 per person in St Thomas,  again depending on how long they stay is a big chunk.

$1600 each sounds like way too much to me! I totally understand where you are coming from...my friend had a DW in USVI this year and we are getting married next year and we just couldn't afford it (on top of everything FH is in the UK). My friend was really understanding and supportive...good luck ;)
