Is it unrealistic to expect to pay less then $400 on a nice wedding dress? I just can’t see myself spending more on a dress that I will wear for less than 8 hours, even if it is my wedding dress. Everyone I know has spent at least 2k on their dress and don’t even get me started on what they spend on Say Yes to the Dress. I just can’t picture forking out thousands of dollars on my dress because of my budget 🙁

I ordered a bridesmaid’s dress in ivory, and it cost $300. And if you don’t care anything about “the salon experience,” you can shop at places like jcrew and Ann Taylor and Banana Republic and find amazing dresses for $200-$500.

You can look at David’s Bridal or even some department stores.

Have you thought about getting a knock-off made? Sorry, knock-off isn’t the nicest word… but they can be done very well! Though I’m not sure about the exact price point. You should ask someone who’s ordered a dress through dressilyme or a place along those lines.

No, it’s not unreasonable! I can’t get over the cost of wedding dresses and think it’s really absurd. I think regardless what my budget was, I’d never spend the “normal” amount on a wedding dress. It really does blow my mind.
Since I wanted vintage, I knew I wouldn’t be spending as much as a new, modern dress. I got my dress from etsy for $179.00 (not including shipping).
Once you determine what you want in your dress, check out other avenues of getting it,

@ProfessorGirl: Totally second this – my dress is a bridesmaids dress as well, Nordstrom, Monique Lhuillier, $200!
The Wedding Suite at Nordstrom has been awesome, can’t state that enough.

- Wedding: May 2013 - Pavilion overlooking golf course scenery, reception at banquet hall
You are not crazy to not want to spend that much, and you certainly aren’t alone! It is totally possible to find a gorgeous dress under $400. Remember that tacking the word “wedding” or “bride” to anything will raise the price. So you can look at bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, or just plain white dresses anywhere. You can browse used dresses (used meaning literally only worn once) and likewise you can sell the dress you got in order to make up the initial cost.

It depends what a nice wedding dress means to you, I guess. From my perspective, yes, you can absolutely set your budget where you’re comfortable and find something great. I recommend http://www.unique-vintage.com/, they have a lot of interesting and unique wedding dress options, some are “actually” prom dresses and thus don’t have a wait time to order and the prices are fantastic.

Not sure if they do Running of the Brides near you (if they are still doing it, not sure what happen after filenes basement closed and theres no new info on their site: http://www.filenesbasement.com/running-of-the-brides/) but I got mine there for $250 + $130 in alterations. It was a Jasmine with a $899 price tag on it.
