    Anyone here get braces recently? If so, what kind did you get and around how much did it cost?

    I have to get braces on my bottom teeth only since two teeth have shifted. I went to the orthodontist today and he quoted me a price of $4,000 for regular old metal braces. Before I squeezed the price out of him (he wanted me to pay $360 for a mold before quoting a price) he tried to charge me $130 for the consultation - which was not explained to me at all when I made the appointment. They mentioned nothing about a consultation fee, of course.

    Is this normal?? I just feel like that pricing is really steep.

    Ya, thats about right. I had them when I was younger but I need them again. Does your insurance cover any of it? Mine only pays for children up to 19 years old, so I wont be getting them :(

    My daughter's braces were a little less that $5500 total. Insurance covered $1500 and I covered the rest. The cost covers all of the Dr's visits, any maintenance, bands, etc. My daughter's were a little more expensive b/c she had a cross bite that needed to be taken care of along with the braces. She's had them about 18 months now and they should be coming off in another 6 weeks or so.

    Mine were (top and bottom teeth) $6000.  Just got them off last year.

    I would suggest you get a few more quotes just to make sure about the cost for bottom teeth only.  And if it's only for two teeth that have shifted (and you don't have major work to get done), you could also consider invisalign.

    I got top teeth with the clear brackets in the front so they werent as noticable and regular ol metal ones on the bottom with a top adult ortho in my city.  He is a good friend of my ex boyfriend's sister so he hooked me up for a whopping $4950.  It was actually a great deal for what his office normally charges. My insurance didnt cover any of it.  I did pay for it through my company's medical spending account so that helped a lot.

    I did not pay a consult fee.  I am shocked they didnt tell you that in the beginning.  I met with several orthos before i went with him.  I am SOO happy i did.  All of the others wanted to treat me like a teenager by ripping out 4 teeth (2 top and two bottom) and then shifting them around.  This would have caused my face to sink in since my teeth would not be there holding my lips out.

    My ortho flat out told me that if i went with another ortho not to let them do that to me because it would change the shape of my face.

    This ortho pulled one bottom tooth and worked the rest around.  He clearly knew what he was doing.  I am SUPER thankful i went with someone who specialized in adult braces.

    Good Luck!

    Thanks everyone! No my insurance doesn't cover it. I chose not to go with invisalign because I don't want to worry about constantly maintaining the trays, I'd rather have the old fashioned permanent metal. Everyone I've spoken to around here told me that top and bottom are around $4,000 so when he quoted me that for just the bottom I almost fell out of my chair. I also thought springing the $130 consultation fee on me without any mention of it previously was a little fishy.

    Oh i should add that i've had a couple of teeth shift *slightly* because I was a bad girl and didnt wear my retainer after my dog broke it.  My ortho made me a new retainer and put metal pieces into it that pushed my teeth back to where they belonged...

    That was $310.

    I did not pay any consult fees. Mne will be about 6500 for traditional top and bottom, then I will be having jaw surgery. The price includes all visits and retainers at the end. My dental insurance covers 1500 of the braces and medical will cover most of the surgery. Estimated duration of treatment is 28 months.

    I am in Canada so our prices cannot be compared to yours. I had upper and lower done -finished about 9 months ago. Total price was $3000. Half was paid by my dental insurance, other half paid by SO's dental insurance as we are living together. Out of pocket cost $0!

    @moderndaisy:

    Yes, I get the braces 3 months ago and it was the one that cover both upper and lower teeth since 6 of my teeth were not in proper shape and it cost me $4500. Other than that the Orthodontist cost and other miscelleneous cost reached it to $5000. Since I read earlier about orthodontic insurance plans on a website http://www.orthodonticinsuranceplans.net, I was sure that it will be expensive and therefore before going for the orthodontic treatment, I take the orthodontic insurance. It covered $2500 of total cost and was a big help for me. Three months are passed and doctor said that it takes 9 more month to get in shape. Hope it will look better till my marriage.
