my bridesmaid dresses cost $180 (they retail for $230 though), most of the girls in my party had no problem paying for the dresses. one of my bridesmaids even said that she had to buy a $250 dress for a wedding that she was in this past summer, but she said that was really pushing it. in the end to make me feel better about it, i offered to pay for $50 of the dress as part of the bridesmaid gift, bringing the dress down to $130. nobody complained about that and some of the girls even said it was unnecessary.
I did a poll on this... maybe it will give you an idea, then approach and ask what shes comfortable w/

It totally depends on your BM's financial situations. Are they all students, who don't have a full-time income? If so, I would want to keep the cost as low as possible. You can ask each of them what amount they would feel comfortable paying. Also, if it's a dress they can wear again, they'll probably be willing to pay more, which gives you more flexibility with choices.
I've been in two weddings now where the bride(s) set the color and let the bridesmaids pick their own dress. Both wedding photos looked great and no one stuck out even though the dresses were all slightly different. It was also nice to get to pick something that flattered my body. The first one specified David's Bridal Candy Apple Red. The second one specified a black knee length dress. This may help with the cost issue as each girl could have some control over their dress cost. Just an idea.
i know i am a broken record today- but go shopping with them! that way you can see what they like and they can get an idea of what the dresses cost, and baybe you will find a great deal you both like!!!
it really depends..i wanted to spend under 200..our dress ended up coming out to 150 with a disount..it would have originally been 180..but it depends on what your brides are willing to spend...
I was in a wedding where my dress was $350 and I was PISSED! I would definitely take into consideration your friend's financial situations. I was making hardly any money and this broke the bank big time. You want your friends to be happy that they were asked - not resent you for making them spend a lot of money on a dress they will never wear again (lets all be honest...right?). There are plenty of beautiful bridesmaid dresses out there for a reasonable price - and besides all eyes are going to be on YOU!!
good luck!

I am sure that there are already boards about this - but how much does the average bridesmaid dress cost? I just started looking for BM dresses ranging from $150-$300 - So tough to ask a friend to pay for these ...
