I’m sorry if this is too personal for some people, but for those who don’t mind sharing – how much was your engagement ring?
Do you know how much the setting vs the diamond was?
Was the cost of your ring “above, below, or average” in your group of friends?
I’m just curious. I’m not engaged yet but I only very recently learned how expensive rings were!

@mscuppycake: I’ll play! My stone was an heirloom but Blue Nile stalking + our appraisal of the stone leads me to estimate that it would be about 2k to purchase new. My setting is platinum and customized and was also 2k. So technically the ring is “worth” 4k, appraised for 5400k (I think) and out of pocket cost us 2k. 🙂
I would say this is slightly below my group of friends, but I love it! Plus, we got engaged sort of spontaneously and didnt set aside time to save, etc.
Here she is:

I don’t want to say the exact cost of my ring, but it is at the highest range of your poll ($13,000+).
Most of my friends aren’t engaged yet, and for the few that are married, mine definitely is the most expensive. Then again, I have a pretty good job and my SO is also 14 years older than me and really established in his career so we can afford it now. Also, we are not spending much on the wedding at all.. the ring was more of a priority for us. We’re not party people lol.
Not sure how much the cost of the setting and diamond differs, but it’s not the simplest setting so I would say the setting accounts for a fair bit of the cost.

@mscuppycake: I don’t have my ring yet, but we are working out the details for having a custom one made. My center stone will be about 1ct emerald cut and will cost $4-4500. The setting will be about $1500, and it’s a pave halo in 14k white gold 🙂 my ring will probably be about average, but only a few in my group of friends are engaged/married.

My ring is between $15,000+ to $22,000 Its a canadian diamond center stone and my setting is platnum Verragio venetian. I would say mine would be average with my group of friends.

I have an antique ring, it was $1200, bought on etsy so we got a great deal.

My ring cost 15,000. The diamond itself was 10,000 and the two sapphires were 1200. The rest was for the 18k rose gold.
My ring is definitely more expensive than my group of friends. We are fairly young (I’m 22 and SO is 24) so the fact that he was able to pay 15k cash for my ring is kinda abnormal for our age group.

Mine was an heirloom, so he only spent ~$300 to get it resized and repaired a bit. It was appraised at $6,000 (platinum with 0.7 center diamond, 1.0 total carat weight). But I’m sure you could get a similar antique for less since they don’t sell at appraisal values.
I’d say it’s average or bigger than most of our friends’. None of us are wealthy and here the size/stone of your ring is not an important status symbol. I have friends with plain bands, gemstones, heirlooms, and new small-to-medium diamonds.

My ring will cost $15,000 to $20,000, depending on the diamond that my SO ends up picking. Setting will be $5k of the total cost. We agreed on how much to spend on the ring.
Most of my gfs aren’t engaged yet but I’d say this is average for my immediate circle of friends or peers and probably below average for NYC area. One of my classmates got engaged recently and her FI spent $40,000 on the ring (as told to my guy friends).

The diamond is worth $7k, but since he dropped that much money they toss the setting in for free.

My 1ct celebration cut diamond was about $5500 and came with a setting. As far as my group of friends goes, it’s on the higher end of average. But most have a higher TCW because of the number of small diamonds in thier set. My set TCW is about 1.3.

My ring (palladium and peridot) cost less than $500 🙂 I have no idea what the norm is for my friends — probably higher, since everyone I know has a diamond.

Ring was almost $30k after tax. Setting was about $1500 so pretty nominal compared to the stone. I, too, was really surprised how expensive rings were, especially how much more expensive it gets the larger the stone…it makes sense but I was just a little startled.
My SO is 7 years older than me and does extremely well. Regarding my social circle, compared to my 2 girlfriends who married our classmates right out of school, we’re above. For my other 2 best girlfriends who are engaged/married to athletes, I can’t really tell because their settings are so enormous but we’re probably below lol.
