Cost to make a corset back into a zipper back?

posted 3 months ago in Beehive

Bees, I need advice!  I'm having a very hard time choosing a gown.  My favorite so far is a lovely Sottero and Midgeley (SSM5049, if anyone's curious), but I really don't like the corset back.  Does anyone know how much it might cost to turn the corset into a plain zipper?  (I tried calling the salon where I tried the gown on, but no answer yet ...)

I was under the impression that most Maggie Sotteros were available in either a zipped back or corset... And if not, the manufacturer can probably make it that way for you by special request.

more than likely the mfr can make this change.

thats what i did for my dress. Allure 8350. it came with a zippered back but i wanted lace up. for $150 more bucks i got it the way i wanted.

i would assume that converting it to a zipper would be less expensive. i did go thru a wholesaler though so the cost may be less than other places.....

doesnt hurt to ask....you just might get it!

I have Maggie Lavina!  The dress itself has a corseted back but then a zipper and buttons overtop of that.  Could the dress shop contact them and see if they could do the same?

If they have it on one couldn't they do it for all?

KatieB, I tried on the Maggie Lavina and I loved it!!  So gorgeous.  I think it's a bit too formal for my wedding, but I just had to rave about how stunning it is.

I got a call back from the bridal salon, and here's the scoop.  Apparently Maggie can make any gown a zipper back for $125.  Many of the newest ones have either a zipper or a corset option at no extra cost, but unfortunately the one I like doesn't fall in that category :-(  Even with the extra cost it's still within my budget, though -- I'll have to think some more about this one ...

Hi Melissa... I'm glad you got the answer from the bridal salon and it's within your budget.  I really love the way the corset back looks on Maggie gowns.  She makes them so well. The Seamstress that altered my gown told me that as well (i didn't wear a maggie, but i asked if she could turn my gown into a corset back).  The guests are looking at the back of the bride and groom most of the time during the ceremony, I wanted to have a lace up back.  Love the elegance :)   It's also adjustable so if there is some slight weight changes in between your final fitting and wedding day, the corset back can accomodate better than a zipper back.  Obviously the choice at the end of the day is yours, but I wanted to share an opinion about the corset back for you to consider before you make your final decision.

SMT, I've liked corsets on other people, but the truth is they look awful on me.  I have a short torso, and most of the time the laces end right at the widest part of my bottom, which is really not an area I want to emphasize.  I've tried on several lace-up gowns, and every time I look at the photos of the back my gut reaction is "ugh, not good."  Like I said, it works great for other brides, but it definitely isn't my look!

Hi melissa,  Hmmm i understand your point about the position of the lace.   I'm petite and one of the boutiques I went to had samples of the maggie dresses made for petite brides... they had a much better fit where the waist lines started where they were supposed to.  The sales person told me that this was made possible by a hollow to hem custom order.  see this link for a definition:  http://www.houseofbrides.com/pages.php?pageid=18  You may want to talk to your store to see if hollow to hem arrangement can work for your maggie dress - irrespective of the back you choose.  HTH and good luck =)
