This is actually a ‘babymoon’ post, but thought I’d put it in honeymoons anyway. Would love input on traveling to Costa Rica! We will probably go for around 9-12 days (including travel time) at the end of November/early December. My husband is a surfer, so he wants to stay in Mal Pais for some of the time. I will be about 5+ months pregnant when we go. We do NOT enjoy big all inclusive resorts. We will splurge on accomodations, but I prefer smaller boutique hotels. We will probably fly into San Jose, rent a car, and make our way to Mal Pais/Santa Teresa. Any suggestions for places to visit? Interested in Monteverde, Arenal, Guancaste National Park.

My suggestion isn’t in any of those places but take a look at a place called Luna Lodge. It’s Rhein the mountains, borders a wildlife refuge and you can take a shuttle to the beach. It’s wonderful. Small hotel, tree top views, yoga and massages, excellent food, etc, etc

@Glasgowbound: Thanks, that place looks amazing! Exactly the type of hotel we like to stay at. I think its a little too far South though 🙁

I live in CR. Love it! Mal Pais/Santa Teresa are amazing. Check out a great hotel called Casa Zen… nice atmosphere, nice food, nice owner/staff.
Monteverde is amazing- you def need to spend a few days there, and go to the Santa Elena Cloud Forest, not the actual Monteverde one- Santa Elena is less crowded and you’ll have a better shot at seeing wildlife. It looks like an enchanted forest! There are a ton of cute boutiquey hotels in Monteverde, and the best ice cream and cheese in the country is made there.
The Nosara area is also amazing. Playa Samara is beautiful. and Playa Guiones is a surfers dream. AMAZING sunsets there in December!
Rent a 4×4 rental card for sure. Roads can be rough, but they’re totally doable.
What else are you interested in down here? I can give you more info or more specific info if you like. I love my adopted country!

@lanalnoco: Thank you for the information! Any hotel recs for the Nosara/Playa Guiones area?
My husband went to Monteverde when he visited CR about 6-7 years ago, doesn’t seem like he’s wild about going back…
