The prices are definitely better (though not better than a keg).

I’d recommend Costco because the prices are probably comparable, but Costco has a MUCH better corportate philosophy and pay and treats its employees well.

@Murphymcnasty:  I have purchased prosecco and local wines at costco and they were much cheaper than at a beer store/grocery store.  I am pretty sure the beers looked cheaper too in price.  I love all things Costco so I am biased 🙂

Also, thinking about your FI’s concerns, something to consider.

I think people will realize that a keg runs out too, but since you can’t SEE how much is left, I’d actually be less concerned if I were trying to get drunk about it running out soon than if I saw the bottles quickly disappearing. I’d be trying to get back to that ice bucket before there were no bottles left. I think I’d probably go crazier with the bottles than the keg because I could easily observe the risk of not getting more if I don’t take some NOW.

Costco and Sam’s usually have very similar prices, so I would stick with Costco since it’s kinder to its employees! (And I’m from Seattle, the HQ for Costco, so I’m pretty biased haha.)

To be honest, I drink more if there’s a keg, because my cup will be half empty and I will think, gotta get some more! If I am busy dancing/mingling at a wedding, and I’m holding a bottled beer, I am very likely to drink some of it, set it down, pick it up again later… You know.

I don’t think TOO many people will get crazy if you are just serving beer, people tend to get rowdier when there is hard liquor involved 😉

@Murphymcnasty:  Yes, and remember, you’ll get the deposit back, plus if you ask around, you may know someone with a tap or may be able to rent one.

Most kegs in America have 15.5 gallons of beer, almost 7 cases worth of 12-oz cans/bottles (24 cans per case = 168 beers). Plus, people will think more about the quality of beer if they’re holding the can/bottle in their hand than if it’s from a keg, which you may not care about, but I always feel like I have to buy nicer beer when it’s coming by the bottle for some reason. I may be crazy.
