I was wondering that too. I was thinking that you went straight from the couch to a 5K?!
I've looked into it but haven't started it yet. hoping to start it next week. How is it goin this time around? Good Luck!
I made it up to five minutes of running, then wussed out. I think one of my bridesmaids and I might start it again in January.
I used the podcasts from Robert Ulrey (I think that's his name). They're great for getting started.
I would love support with this. Unfortunately, when I looked at that blog a month ago it said you should be able to run 2 miles straight so I'm on the 2 mile plan right now!
@ Jacqi & Rosie Gir - lThe couch 2 5k is a 9 week running program that usses intervals to ease you into it. So you start of with a 5 min walk to warm up and then do a walk-run (I'm pretty sure the first week is run 60 sec walk 90) then a 5 min cool down. They're are lots of podcast that tell you when to do what. The program is for those new to running or new to long-distance running. The walk-run inveral is the best way to get into running if you have any knee or ankle issues. (as long as you doctor has approved it!)
@ gointothechapeland - So far I've had no knee problems this time around, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
@ des salazar - I'm not sure what you mean I haven't seen anything about running 2 miles before you start.
I made it through the first week but then I had the flu I couldn't even stand for more than a minute let alone run. I want to get back on it soon, I may wait until January to start it again.
I'm on week 2 (after a long break and a restart)!!! I started it to get back into shape because it's a workout that I can ease back into (drs think I had a stress fracture in my shin). I hope your knee isn't bothering you too much. My fiance had taken a glucosamine/chondritin supplement for his knee and swore by it. I thought it was all in his head but have found that in combination with stretching and strengthening, it seems to have helped. Good luck!
OOOOH i like like, my fiance is a runner and runs at least 3 or 4 5ks a year and i always want to but i can never get the oomph to start up, and when I do i do exactly that, i start to much right away and get discouraged after running for 2 days.
I will definitely be on board for this one!!! Count me in!!! When did you start?
@ AshCo - I started Monday and did my 2nd day this morning. I'm thinking about trying to do 4 days a week instead of 3 so I can make sure that I've actually got each week down.
EEp. Maybe I should look into starting this one next week ... I have started running recently ... it's not easy, that's for sure! I wish I could see the blog but it's blocked at work!
You can do it! Running is all mental! Just put on a good playlist on your ipod and hit the pavement! I went from not running at all in Januray to finishing my first marathon in October! Running does AMAZING things to your body!
I did it! The first day I thought I would die. Like seriously... wanted to die. I had to repeat a couple of weeks and when it got to the week where you were supposed to run 20 minutes I wasn't ready so I stopped it and just tried to increase by 30 seconds every run. It took me about 15 weeks but I was able to run 30 minutes without stopping (although 30 minutes is not 5k unless you run faster than I do!)
I did a 5k in August and finished in 41min-- which is really good for me! Unfortunately I've fallen off the wagon. Would love to start back up. :)
It is a great program and I highly recommend it. I used the program 3 years ago. When I started, running 5 minutes was terribly difficult. 6 months later, I ran a half marathon! Running is mental and it is amazing what our bodies are capable of. Good luck!
i've always been the "i'm not a runner" " i could never do it" girl... but i gotta say, reading your posts and checking out that link has put a fire under me!! i'm so motivated to do this!!! thank you girls!
I am doing a sligtly modified version of the couch to 5k plan where I play around with the intervals depending how I am feeling during the workout...I prob should use some more structure, but I like how my method is allowing me to push my self a little bit harder when I feel I can. I may need to switch things up to being more structured though as I am thinking I might want to sign up for a 5k in Feb. The trouble is I am running on a treadmill now, not outdoors so I don't really know how that would effect me.
I am also doing the program and have signed up for my first 5k in February! As for your knee, using a brace is awesome, but you can also tape your knees just for running to help prevent injuries. Just google it and there are a whole bunch of tutorials out there.
I signed up for my first 5k in april :) and i am doing this program to see how it goes :)
I'm doing it!! Starting Week 3 today!
Does anybody know if the walking speed when you do the "walk" portion matters? I did Week 2 with a run speed of 6.0 and a walk speed of 4.7, but the walk felt super fast! I'd love to slow the walk down, but I'm not sure if the point of the walk is to take a breather or to power through it. Any thoughts?
The great thing about this program is that it is keeping me more consistent about working out. I don't want to fall behind, so 3x/week it is!
@GreekGirl - I think the point of the walk is to catch your breath so you have the energy to keep jogging/running throughout the entire session. Personally, 4.7 sounds like jogging to me, because I usually jog at 4.4 and walk at 3.0 (I'm really, really not a runner!). I bet you could slow it down a notch for walking part and still stay on track.
While I am a regular runner (well more like jogger, ha), my FI is NOT so I am starting him on this program tomorrow!!! Keep up the good works ladies - I am going to use this thread to motivate him!
jduck- Thanks for the info! The 4.7 power walk was almost harder than the running, so I'm glad I can tone it down :)
I would love to do a 5k. I don't like running that much though. I am good at power walking.
I'm starting tomorrow! I'm not a runner at all, so I definitely need to ease into it and I've heard great things about the couch to 5k. If anyone uses an iphone while running, there is an app you can buy for $2.99 that gives you cues to walk and run while you're listening to your playlist. I'm going to be running outside and not on a treadmill, so this is perfect for me.
I started this last Monday, so today started week 2 for me! I've never EVER been a runner, so this is definitely a challenge, but I'm finding that my endurance is getting better already!
Hey girls,
I'm following this program a little bit, along with a 3x/week training class at my gym (it's killer).
For 2010, FI and I set a new years resolution - to run 12 5ks in 12 months!!! I've started blogging about it - http://twelve-in-twelve.blogspot.com/
Our first one is on 1/23. yes, it's outdoor in Minnesota!! Wish me luck!! :) Great job all you "couch-to-5k"ers. Keep up the good work!!
You girls can totally do this! One thing to keep in mind is that you don't have to be fast! As long as you're jogging/running, you're better off than when you were sitting on the couch! Do the intervals like the program says, and as long as you stick with it, you'll be there! It's such an amazing feeling when you finish your first 5K!
I'm going for the half marathon next...

Any other couch 2 5k-ers out there? This is my first week, I tried once before but had to stop after the 2nd week because of knee pain. I'm prepared this time with a good knee brace and I'm icing my knee after running regardless of whether it hurts! I'd love to have a couch 2 5k support thread.
