you just made me google couch 2 5k workout. this is the first time i heard about it. i may tried this
I started this on the weekend and I also started the 30 day shred. Ambitious I am! lol. FH and I did it and was a really good start. We will be doing it again tonight. Managed to pull the first session pretty good. Suprised I could actually run lol.
I was surprised too! I mean I was dead tired by the end, but I never had to stop running before I was supposed too :)
Yay for 30 day shred! On my "off" days from running I'm either going to start that back up or do the Wii Active again (I was doing it everyday in January :/).
I have the Wii active too! I dont really like it as much. :S Thats why im doing these programs. I will try not to do it, but I understand that I at least need to do something to see some results.
Im interesting to see what the second week will bring. I look at it now and im like yee gods.. hope i dont die. haha
@Magenta: You should try it (and I know you have an iphone ;) )!! I have zero endurance/athletic ability and I made it through the first night without completely dying. And I haven't exercised in over 2 months!!
I start week four today, its gonna be a lot more running it seems like but hopefully I will be prepared, it seems like I have progressed each week easily so hopefully today will be no exception!
I don't have an iphone, but there are a lot of podcasts and mp3s to download free. I really like robert ullreys, I have used his most of the time, the music is basically technoish, but its not too bad to run to, kinda gets ya on a beat.
I just downloaded the app last night and will probably try it sometime next week (for some reason I'm a little apprehensive to try it out immediately!). Thanks for the feedback, now I'm not as intimidated!
I told myself I would start this two weeks ago and never did. I really have to! Keep us updated. :) You're giving me hope that I can do it - I'm a terrible runner, as much as I don't want to be.
I did it last year and I'm doing it again! When I started last year I had never been able to run before and I thought I'd DIE after the first session. I couldn't do it in 10 weeks, but in about 15-20 I was able to jog 30 min without stopping and I did my first 5k!!
Then I stopped for some inexplicable reason.
I just restarted this week at week 3, and I'm hoping it doesn't take me 15 weeks to get back to being able to jog 30 min!
I just finished week 3 day 1. I tried the couch to 5k before, but always had problems with knee pain. I've been proactive this time and I'm still free of knee pain :-) (knock on wood)
ETA - If you have facebook you should join the couch to 5k group, the group gives lots of good advice and everyone is very supportive and inspirational! Here's the link http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/C25Kplan?ref=ts
Ok, I post about this every time, but I LOVE C25K. I also 100% agree the iPod app makes it actually doable for me.
When I started 60 seconds was really hard for me, and last night I ran my 3 minute segments with out any problems at all! And, the my sore and stiff legs finally warmed up, running actually felt good at one point (for a very short amount of time).
Keep it up, if you just do what the app says, you will be successful. You will totally love it!
Good luck, and keep posting about your progress!
Oh also, follow the program to a tee. One day off is perfect, two days off is ok once in a while. I just took 3 days off, and my run was great, but I had a lot of trouble motivating myself to actually go out and do it. It is much easier to do it every other day.
ITA with Kingcake! When I skip two days in between I definitely feel it on the next run.
I am not a runner, my endurance level is below zero but you all give me hope I can make it through the 9 weeks! Thanks for all the tips.
I was going to do M/W/F and skip the weekend, but do other exercises on the off days. I think I'm going to run every other day now that I have read all your advice!
I think you'd be fine skipping the weekend. 2 days are ok occasionally, it is just that more than 2 messes up my motivation. I would stay away from any off-day workouts that involve leg muscles for a while...even elliptical and walking. If you're new to running (like I was) you really need the day of actual rest to repair your muscles, and bones, and other leg parts. I do arm weights on my days off (ok, I should say I TRY to do arm weights on my days off?) :)
I am so excited you've started this. You should seriously find a 5k to enter, it is awesome to have a goal, I have finally realized.
@kingcake: thanks! I have a bunch of wii exercise "games" that I will be using on my off days so I can work on my upper body.
I'm looking for a 5K to run! My ultimate goal is the Disneyland half marathon in September. Eventually (in like year :p) I want to be able to run from my house to the Santa Monica Pier which is 26 miles away. They have a biking/walking trail along the beach the whole way!!
Posting here is definitely going to keep me motivated because now I know all these ladies know I've started the program and I don't want to fail!!
I love c25k. I am not a runner at all, but this really got me into it. I DLed the iphone app too! I am taking my time with it because around week 5 it started to get hard for me, and I also took a little workout hiatus so I went back to week 4. It's designed to do in 9 weeks, but if you need an extra day on a certain day/week, then don't be afraid to take it! I'm hoping to run a 5k sometime before the end of July.
there's an app? Oh man ... I'm betting I could get it for ipod touch, too. C25K is my favorite!! Looove it ... seriously.
@alisha: the new version is compatible with the itouch! There are a couple of C25K apps but I downloaded the one made by Alex (it as a green man running on the icon) because it seemed the easiest/you cold add your music to the actual app :)
Glad to know you like C25K so much!!
I've been trying to motivate myself to run. Ok so I'm not kidding that I'm NOT a runner, but you have all inspired me, I think I'll try this! I'm seeing a lot about the iPhone app but I don't have an iPhone, any suggestions for an iPod??
Because of all the positive, encouraging comments about C25K I started it last night on the treadmill. Let me just say that I have never been athletic, even as a kid, and have tried running before and just hated it, but Couch to 5k made it so accessible for me! I was surprised that I could keep up, actually. The only real tricky thing is getting the right settings on the treadmill on time! I'm a little sore but nothing unmanageable.
I'm probably going to try to keep on a Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday schedule.
@kansas: do you have the itouch? The app I am talking about works for the itouch. If not, I have heard there are podcasts you can download to a regular ipod that have music and tell you when to walk/run.
I'm glad all these people are so motivated to start the program!! :D
@babyboo: I have just a regular iPod (nothing fancy for me, I have a hard enough time figuring it out!) but I did finally figure it out! I'm downloading ALL of the podcasts for each week now so I have NO excuse!
So it's 3 days a week? Is that right?
@kansas: Yeah it is 3 days a week. As the ladies above have told me though, it is okay to repeat a week if you don't feel ready to move on. And a warning, I ran Monday night and my thighs are STILL burning!!
@babyboo: Thanks for the advice!!! I just got home from my W1D1 and am not looking forward to tomorrow's feeling, haha! Thank goodness though I've been doing the 30 Day Shred video for a while now and it works your thighs pretty hard. Whew. I hope I can get into the swing of running, I really would like to...we'll see. :)
Just wanted to pop in with an update:
I FINISHED WEEK 1 TONIGHT!! :D
Been doing Wii active strength training on my off days. Start week two on Monday!
Ok so our board kind of died down ladies, how's it going?? I started W1D1 over with my SO because he wanted to start so this is my second week on the first podcast. I feel like I'm more worn out this week than I was in the beginning, it's really frustrating! :( How is everyone else doing??
@Kansas: running with your SO will make it so much easier. The boy is an athlete, but he has a torn achilles that he is in rehab for. Even with the injury he is in better shape than me and keeps me motivated to keep going. Bringing the dogs with us also helps distract me from the run.
I just finished W2D2 yesterday and its a bit harder, but doable :)
@babyboo: Yes, he totally helps me keep motivated!!! I would probably cheat a little if he were not next to me haha. I wish we could take our dogs but I'd have broken bones. The last "run" we took our yellow lab on I had a cut hand and cut calf when we got home...she caught her leash on the fire hydrant and pulled me along haha!
Good luck babyboo!!! I just did W2D1 today and actually did okay! I got a new pair of shoes and I think that really made a big difference, they're actually running shoes and not picked out for their level of cuteness ;)
Good running shoes make all the difference! I bought a pair of Saucony shoes that I only use to exercise/run in. My feet never hurt after a run (compared to my New Balance which are just good for walking).

I just finished my first day of the Couch 2 5K program! The boy and I took our dogs out on an extended walk run and everyone was panting by the end of it.
I downloaded an iPhone app called C25K and it was the BEST thing I could have done. It lets you download your music playlist to the app. It keeps track of your time and everytime you are supposed to switch from walk to run it interupts your music for a second to ding and say "start walking" or "start running." It also includes a 5 minute warm-up and 5 minute cool down.
At the end of my workouts I have it set up to update my facebook with my progress :)
I'm hoping to lost about 5 pounds and tone-up so hopefully I can stick with it!! Also in September the boy and I are planning to run a half-marathon
Has anyone completed the program? How did you like the results??
