FutureFong:  If you stick to a neutral color sofa , you will always be able to use it in a new home.

Don’t worry about it being too small. You can always add extra chairs when you live in a larger home.

Grey is a great neutral with which you can use almost any color accent cushions, area rugs etc. A basic style and an ottoman can mimic a chaise lounge sectional sofa, or be used separately with a coordinating chair.

We just recently went through this! We bought our couch knowing we would only be in our apartment for 1-2 years before moving into our forever home. Like julies1949:, we went with a neutral color so that it will fit in any home we find ourselves in. And while it fits perfectly in our current apartment, we’re sure it will be swallowed up in our future home. We plan to add some nice big comfy chairs to our set when we move.

It’s similar to this in color (not in design!!):

ETA: I know you said you don’t like the dark colors… We saw plenty of lighter gray couches as well!

The leather would probably withstand some staining. I have a beige couch for the formal area and an awesome avocado green sofa for the basement where we usually hang out, and they are both great.

My first reach couch is a lazy boy– just got it this year. Super comfortable and very sturdy. Has held up great.

We just bought a brown leather sectional (the “Juno’ by Palliser) and love it. It wasn’t cheap, but we bought it with the intention of being able to grow into it, especially when it came to kids and pets. We have dark floors, but I bought a light beige shag rug from Costco and kept wall colors and window coverings light and neutral and it doesn’t make our living room look too dark at all….keep in mind we live in an 800sq.ft condo.  If you relly love something you can definitely make it work by being strategic with accessories.

This is our couch (the sectional configuration and the brown leather).  Sorry if the picture is huge.
