Couchsurfing, am I paranoid?

Well, Indy is the the largest city in Indiana, so I guess I could see people wanting to stay there, there isn’t really a whole lot going on here.

There’s probably nothing to worry about, but if your sister is worried about it perhaps she should have a talk with him, and you should let them be.

I don’t think couch surfing has to be a cultural thing. Back home in California I had a whole slough of friends who hosted couch surfers. Most of the time they’re just broke kids who are traveling. It has nothing to do with culture at all.

I can’t speak for the company. I’d assume larger companies could afford to pay for it, I wouldn’t assume all would. After all, my dad (Who works for the government) has to go on a yearly trip to a convention that travels around the continental US… my dad has to pay for his hotel (The government pays for his travel) every year. I mean, if it’s a requirement, shouldn’t they pay for it? Yeah, but they don’t.

At the worst you can talk to your sister. Tell her your fears. At worst, she laughs at you for being overprotective (but I’m sure she can understand why.) But I’d trust her gut — if she doesn’t feel something hinky is going on, I’d be worried but just try to keep it to yourself.

He hosts a lot of couch surfers and you immediately jump to weird sex? I feel like the much more probable and logical thing that’s happening is…he legitimately enjoys hosting couch surfers. Indianapolis is surrounded by several major highways, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people just pass through on road trips. It’s actually really nice of him to want to help out people like that.

If we get couchsurfers in Portsmouth,NH, I’m absolutely certain that there is an abundance of couchsurfers in Indianapolis. It is used from all kinds of reasons:broke kids, traveling artists, road trippers that just need a break, professionals having a job interview… you name it.

Most people want to save some money on a hotel night and have some fun in a city they don’t necessarly know rather than spend the night with cable and hotel food.

As far as what a couchsurfer is “supposed” to be like, I have met hosts that were your typical 20-something college kid, but also families, people working your typical 9-to-5, empty nesters, so on and so on.

Just because he does not correspond to your idea of a genuine couchsurfer does not necessarily means that he is just in it for sex. Maybe he just enjoys hosting people, meeting random strangers and showing his city?

Talk to your sister about your concerns but don’t jump to conclusions. Tell her to simply ask him why he is hosting, how he chooses his surfers and arrange for her to maybe go out with him and some of them if she is not comfortable. But at the end of the day, it’s really between him and her.

I know two people who got couchsurfers pregnant so I totally understand your worries. It is often used as a casual sex thing, especially for young females staying at males houses (one of my friends does it when overseas to pick up men). I would be concerned if I was you

renierose: I don’t know…if he just wanted to have sex with a bunch of randoms, he could do it without creating an elaborate ruse about couchsurfing.

I’d imagine that Craigslist would be a lot easier and faster than waiting for someone from five hours away to show up.

Couchsurfing or not… when I’ve had a bad feeling about a family member’s partner, I’ve always been right.
