Gargling with salt water is very effective for a sore throat- one tsp of salt in 8 oz. of warm water hourly.
Don't hoard the lozenges- use them. By the way, any hard candy is as effective as any cough candy. They just soothe the throat- they don't do anything for the mechanism that actually makes you cough.
It's hit us on the east coast as well. I got a scratchy throat. My SO has had a week long cold. Bunch of ppl at work got sick and one had to stay home for like 3 days with some flu-like symptoms. My family was hit with the same thing in Wyoming at the same time. These bugs travel fast and hard.
Been doing the same thing as you. Medication as needed. Lots of water. LOTS of vitamins. Hope you feel better!
@julies1949: Gargling every hour? I've done it a couple times already, but I guess not often enough! And don't worry, I'm hoarding all the lozenges but I've been using them as well.
@claireos: Yeah, the people I've talked to that caught it have had to stay home from work a few days as well. I'm glad I've got the weekend at least! And thanks! I hope your scratchy throat doesn't develop into anything further.
I hear you, I had the flu last week and I still wake up with that nasty sore throat in the morning but at least I can finally function again. Best of luck feel better! I lived on Halls fruit breezers and chicken noodle soup.
I got a flu shot a few weeks ago and (crosses fingers) have not been sick yet. But there are several people in my office (all sit near me) who have already had to stay home due to sickness. And people are loudly coughing and sneezing all day.. sanitize, sanitize...
I got sick several times last winter though (hence the flu shot) and the only thing that made me feel better was doing nothing for several days straight. Lay on the couch, drink lots of fluids and try to sleep as much as possible!
@beekiss: I've got a bag of Halls Fruit Breezers next to me right now. Loooove those!
@moderndaisy: I just got my flu shot yesterday morning (before I started displaying these cold symptoms) and now I'm thinking I probably should have waited until this cold came and went. Fortunately I don't think the flu's going around here quite yet... just variations of the common cold.
I got the cold, but I also have a sinus infection on top of it... it's been about a week and I'm just coming out of it... not fun! Atleast it's happening now and not in two weeks on my wedding day!
Almost everyone where I work has it or has some form of it. I am FINALLY getting over it. Been sleeping on the couch all week because I didn't want to wake FI with my nose blowing and random coughing. Can't wait to sleep in a bed again! Thankfully I went to my doctor yesterday and he says my lungs sound clear and as long as I don't get re-occuring fevers or more green mucus I should be good to go. I drank around a gallon of hot tea whenever I was at home...peed every 15 minutes but it helped keep my nose from clogging up and made my throat feel so much better.
One thing that works for me like a charm is my naturopath's tea. I don't make it EXACTLY the way she prescribes because I'm lazy, but it still works my way ;)
It's SO tasty! I had a sore throat earlier this week. I drank a couple mugs of that and was fine the next day.

There's a nasty cold going around here, and poor DH caught it a week ago. He's only just starting to feel better, but unfortunately for me I think I've caught it from him. I've had a sore throat since yesterday, which is exactly how it started for him. :c
I've been chugging water, hoarding throat lozenges, taking Zicam (even if it is just a placebo effect), and crossing my fingers it won't last as long as everyone else's here.
Anyone else a victim of the fall virus season? What do you do to make yourself feel better?
