For me AF always comes at exactly 15dpo, making my luteal phase 14 days which I thought was good…except that I always start spotting at 9 or 10 dpo. Sorry Too Much Information: the spotting starts with red blood on the first day and is followed by brownish for 4 or 5 days, then AF. If I spot so early, could it mean that my luteal phase is actually short? Is there anything I can do to reduce early spotting? Any ideas, appreciated. Thanks very much.

@JumpingJacks: I don’t think it would count as a short LP. But it could be a sign of something else like low progesterone. After tons of research I’ve come to believe that spotting is never a good thing and can be a hint at a problem.

I need to get checked out for this as well because I’ve been spotting around 5 days before my period starts for the last few months – my periods have also changed in length. The last one only lasted 1.5 days. Ugh. I’m blaming it on Endo until I find out something different. I still have to find a doctor in Oregon.

@JumpingJacks: maybe google B-complex… I think some people have tried that to lengthen LP. I wonder about my LP too… mine is 12 days but some months I start spotting 9 or 10 DPO… other months no spotting. I have no idea what causes me to spot some months and not others. The nurse midwife I saw at my annual exam was not concerned. My thyroid was ok and my progesterone apparently ok at 16DPO when I was pregnant (but then I mc’d)…
I’m interested to hear what others have to say…

I agree with Mrs. Green Grass. It’s not a short LP, but it is something you want to get checked out. Good luck!

I’ve heard that spotting can be related to low progesterone too, but I’d check with a doctor.

Thanks for the responses. I did mention to it to my Dr. when I told him we were going to start TTC and he didn’t seem phased, said spotting was normal. It is not my thyroid — I was checked for that with my regular check up blood tests. Some months my temps drop a bit when the spotting starts, other months temps stay high and I still spot….????? I started taking a B complex, so we’ll see, but if it persists I’m going to go back to the Dr. and ask some more questions.

I have this same issue. I start spotting at about 10/11 DPO. I’ve been using progesterone cream (over the counter) and last month took a B complex vitamin. I will warn you, I learned the hard way, B can delay your ovulation. I chart and mine was always on CD 14 and this month it was on CD 17 and that was only with 5 days of the vitamin. I’ve decided to only take it post O from now on. Just a heads up 🙂
