Could this have been a chemical pregnancy?

I haven’t experienced anything like that, but it’s certainly possible. Any time I missed a birth control pill, though, I would spot for a couple of days. Mine was always dark brown/black and clotty when that happened- but I also used to skip my periods, so that could be it.

If it’s important to you, you could certainly call your doctor or ob and chat about it. The only thing I’d be concerned about is developing rh antibodies and needing a rhogam shot for future pregnancies…but I’m not 100% sure that this is necessary with a chemical pregnancy or very early miscarriage.

(This only applies if you are Rh negative….i.e. your blood type is O negative, AB negative, etc.)

I’d honestly say the answer is no, I don’t think you were pregnant. Your period was likely unusual because you didn’t take your pill on time and it screwed with your hormones and normal flow. Especially considering you also use condoms as an additional means of protection to your birth control, very unlikely you were pregnant.

@MissPatience:  I don’t think they could, if it’s been a day or two. Hcg levels drop dramatically after mc.

I guess if I were you, I probably would give my doctor a call. Just because it is such a simple thing, that could make a big difference in the life of a future baby (potentially). To me, it’d be worth it just to see what they think….but I would feel a littly silly too!! Just because the chances of it being a chemical are probably very slim.

Hopefully there is someone who has experienced this that could chime in with some general advice!!

I doubt you were from the timeline you described. I think your spotting & weird discharge was more from missing your pill since I doubt you had time to ovulate from your delayed pill the week earlier. It’s always a possibility but it’s HIGHLY unlikely.

@MissPatience:  I think what you have to think about is the timeline of conception to pregnancy. If you ovulated it would have to be after your missed pill (maybe 1-2 days?). As for sex, the sperms that would get you pregnant are the ones that are there before you ovulate (so sex from before your missed pill). Once you do ovulate, it takes a fertilized egg 6-10 days to implant and that’s when some women experience spotting. All in all it seems like a long shot from the 1st missed pill and pretty much impossible from the 2nd one.

On my BC my period always comes the thurs of the placebo week but one time when I had a lot of anxiety (I thought it was possible I was pregnant bc like you, I missed a pill and I had to double up. Doubling up makes me nauseous, which made me think I was pregnant! lol so I was holding my breath for my period to come) and it came on the friday instead…for the first time in like 4 years it was different. It’s probably either because you were thinking about it or because of the missed pill; I highly doubt you are prego. 🙂

I don’t know much about chemical pregnancies, but I recently had a late period on the pill- for the first time in 5 years. I didn’t miss any pills or take any late the weeks prior either. It doesn’t help that I have had some appetite changes lately and been feeling super hungry. Seriously thought I was having pregnancy cravings!
