We hope to have our ceremony outdoors where we are having our reception. It’s at a renovated German barn. No big trees or anything. Just an open yard area about 25 yards from the barn. We are having a simple short ceremony leading into the cocktail hour (in barn).
Well, the issue I’m having is renting the chairs for about 120. I just seems like a waste to spend 300 plus on chairs when they will only be used for 20 minutes. We are having some type of instrument (haven’t decided) for the music.
Any ideas what we could use instead of chairs? Hay blocks maybe? Pinic blankets for people to sit on? It will be the first Saturday in October so it could be hot or cold in Chicago. What unique ceremony ideas are you having or you have seen? Please send them my way.
Part of me wishes we could get married before hand and NOT have a ceremony. It would save us alot of money (budget is super tight). But with the out of town guest traveling, I’m afraid they would be disappointed.

this probably isn’t very cost effective but it looked cool- My Fair Wedding did the cutest wedding just like u described, and instead of chairs he had all kinds of mismatched stuff; rocking chairs, wooden benches, hay, kitchen table chairs, it all went together really nicely even if it sounds strange.
see if u can find that episode on youtube, the bride in that episode wore cowboy boots 🙂

What are people sitting on for the reception? We used the same chairs for our ceremony and reception at my wedding. I like the hay bale idea, I know someone that went to a wedding with that and said it was really fun. If you’re going to do something on the ground, don’t forget that some people have problems getting on the ground, and others will be wearing short skirts! You’ll need at least some chairs.

Buying or renting haybales could be as expensive or more so, than renting chairs.
Do either of you belong to a church or community organization that you could approach to borrow or rent the chairs from at low cost?

@WIGIRL79: The chairs we are using for the reception will not work. They are black and would look horrible outside. We don’t belong to any churches and not religious. It wouldn’t be right for us to get married in a church. There also isn’t really anything nearby for us to do the ceremony outside of a church. I like the hay idea but your right it will cost as much as the chairs. I do like the My Fair Wedding idea.

I went to an outdoor ceremony a few years ago where most of the guests stood. Going from what you’re saying about not being religious, I’m guessing your ceremony is going to be pretty short.
If you only order chairs for elderly guests and/or family you’ll save money. I happily stood at the outdoor ceremony, and really didn’t mind, considering it was only about 15 minutes.

Umm…when are you having the wedding? bc I know that my friend had a hay ride toward the end of October & by this time ppl selling hay tend to want to get it out of the way. She was able to get 10 bails of hay for $1 a piece. so that would be cheap. She had to have the means to pick them up tho. Some ppl are allergic to hay tho. Something you might want to figure out with your guests before you settle on it.
You could do Logs? either like just laid down & supported by rocks, chopped up & set up-right, or maybe even cut down the middle so theres a flat surface for them to sit on & supported by rocks. idk–it sounds a little awful but I think you could honestly make it cute. like the rocks could be painted the wedding colors with yalls initials on them, or wedding date, or hearts, & stuff.
you could also do like a cute picnic kinda thing where you’d have blankets spread out for ppl to sit on. that probably require letting the ladies know not to wear skirts.
i like the picnic table idea too. just make sure the ushers have them just sit on one side that way no ones back is turned.
idk….just some ideas (:
