it’s your day, do what you want.  no matter what – if you do a big wedding, or a courthouse wedding, someone somewhere is going to be unhappy with some choice you’ve made.

Well, you could do the courthouse wedding you want, and a reception afterward to satisfy her wanting people there.  There’s nothing wrong with a private ceremony and reception.  I think it’s wrong of your FMIL to be verbally inviting anyone to something that you haven’t even started to plan, let alone figure out a guestlist.

You could also do a destination wedding, that gives her the option of inviting people she wants, but it’s not a major cost on your part.  Go somewhere all inclusive, the food’s there, you’re there, your hubby is there.

What does your FI want? Remember, no matter what, the day is about what YOU and HIM want.

we didn’t have a courthouse wedding, but we had a small (30 person) ceremony. people were upset that they weren’t invited, lots of family didn’t come to the reception because of it, and we still aren’t speaking to some. however, i wouldn’t have changed my wedding for anything! i decided if my family came they’d only cause drama here on my wedding day which isn’t needed, and we had a small wedding for a reason. it’s what we wanted, and it was beautiful!

You will be ok – make sure you and FI are on the same page, and even if you feel like people are pushing you around he can be your support to put your foot down ๐Ÿ™‚ And just keep telling yourself…all that extra money will go into your future home and a fabulous honeymoon!

I feel that it is your day, and you should have it just as you and your FI want it. That is what it is about, exchanging vows with the most important person in your life.

Good luck!

We had a very small (a dozen people, including us) wedding in Massachusetts.  Three days later, we had a reception for 60 people back in DC.  We got the intimate wedding we wanted, but still had a chance to celebrate with our friends.
