Our ceremony and reception is in a historical area of town. Our reception is in a gymnasium from the 1920s – hardwood floors, white-washed walls – it’s rustic and perfect.
But, there are two basketball hoops. The poles and in back of the hoops are original, but the basket is new, with the white net and orange rim. There’s two on opposite sides of the gym and I’d like to cover them. We can’t affix anything using tacks, tape, etc., so I’m thinking something drapped or even a cute sign, but I don’t have any real ideas.
Suggestions? I just don’t want people to see two basketball hoops when they walk in! Our colors are purple, blue, and cream and our theme is vintage thrifty, with lots of DIY.

Do you know anygood who could build you something made of wood? I’m picturing large wooden boxes with open backs that you could hang from the hoop/ backboard. Then you could stencil a monogram and paint it according to your colors. The box would

@mrsginmay: I like the idea, and Fiance could make something, but I’d be afraid of the weight. Since it’s the original wooden pole and backing, I don’t know if it could hold the weight of a wooden box.

You could always use mrsginmay’s idea, but with styrofoam. I know Home Depot sells a 4×8 sheet for only a few bucks. With that said though, are you or your FH basketball fans? If so, you could totally play them up even!

@stephanie091512: Ha, nope, we’re not a fan of any sports. It would be convenient if we were, though!

Many basketball nets fold up against the backboard. Have you checked to see if that is the situation with your venue? It would make it much easier to cover with a flat pice of foamcore painted and decorated in the style of your wedding.
If not, you could hang ribbons from the rim- just fold the ribbon in half and pull the loose two end through the loop. Let the ribbons hand or pull them to the side where you have placed something taller like a column, section of a log etc. It would make a cute backdrop for picture taking,
You could also hang a sheer fabric from the ceiling , and thread it through the hope, then either gracefully puddle on the floor, or attach it to the back of a loveseat placed under the net or a table that can be used for gifts etc.
Or you could DIY a monogrammmed banner and hang that from the rim. Given that you can’t use tape etc, you would need to add little fabric ties to the top of the banner.

@julies1949: No, it’s not foldable. Life would be so much easier if it were! We’re using paper chains and kites as some decor, so the ribbon idea goes right in line with that. Even if we don’t compeltely mask it, but use the hoop, would be OK. Maybe using the ribbon to hang a sign.
