My friend/co-worker was over last night and some she works with was sick & throwing up last week and they wouldn't let him go home from work! Then, the next day he was still sick and tried to call in sick and they still made him come in!
I don't know why, but some people actually WANT sick people at work, it's disgusting!
And then, at the same place we work at, we used to have a director that was ALWAYS out sick, and when she was it was always for like a week at a time.
oh man - that really stinks for your friend. If she actually did vomit over there, I would go home if she didn't. The thing is, she works on databases - that's something she could definitely do in the comfort of her own home with the laptop that we all have. No reason to come in like that! Most of our meetings are over the phone and live meeting. Honestly, the office is pretty unnecessary for our jobs. Sigh.. fingers crossed she's out tomorrow with that cough!
Ugh, I hate that!!! My boss does this. It's disgusting and he coughs crap all over stuff and then hands it to me. I am going to invest in the biggest hand sanitizer pump I can find!
That's super-gross and I'm sorry you have to deal with that. People are so stupid to think that they need to come to work when they are obviously ill. They don't consider their co-workers health when they do that and it is just plain rude (not to mention distracting with all the coughing and hacking in the background).
Off topic - but I can't stand it when people call in to work on MONDAYS and FRIDAYS because they want a 3 day weekend. So, conveniently, they are "sick". That totally ticks me off.
Teleworking really needs get more popular. It would bring down overhead costs and keep people healthier/happier.
I think some bosses just like to see their minions in the office.
@Okqueenbee - that's totally going to be me in a few weeks - i scheduled a bunch of drs appointments for the only day my doc had the first AM appointment open. we can't schedule sick days, so i've gotta call out on a friday. I would rather do the right thing, but it's how it works 'round these parts. Rules for the sake of having rules.
Melissa, I am so confused by you changing your avatar! Which one is the real you? The brown headed girl or the one you have now?! I second the "If you're sick GO THE EFF HOME" mentality. One of my coworkers comes in sick all the time and I am SO SICK of him getting everyone else sick.
My avatar now is the awesome ass-kicking Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. Though since my previous avatar, i have gotten some big blonde highlights and some aviators. I just don't know kung-fu .. yet.
@ribbons: I agree, I would do just about ANYTHING to be e teleworker! :)
Oh that's nasty. Sorry you have to listen to that. I knew a girl once who said that people who call into work sick are weak and no one should stay home unless they are in the hospital. My response, "So if I were ill and needed to throw up it'd be okay if I did it in your cubical? Right?" HAHA She didn't like that too much. I mean seriously, sometimes you just got to throw in the towel and stay the hell home. I know I do even if I have a cold, allergies are kicking my ass or if the headache is bad enough---I stare at a computer screen all day and that never helps anything when your head is pounding so bad that meds won't get it to go away---sleep does :)
Oh and Melissa I love that movie :) Awesome choice!
@ Melissa - That's totally different IMO and you are justified in calling in that day because you DO have an appointment.
I work at a place where, well, we rack up boocoo amounts of sick leave and people use them like vacation days. It isn't fair and it bugs me to no end. I just want to scream "LIAR!" when they come back to work lol.
Disgusting. I have a coworker a few cubes over who hawks loogies all day. That really nasty old man sound of "snoooooort" followed by a "hawk".
You know, they let us work from home. My boss does it all the time. It's my COWORKERS who hate doing it. They see it as lazy and often comment, "how is it working if you're at home in pajamas with your kids in the next room?" and joke it's really a "vacation" day. So there's a big stigma with my coworkers (men in their 30's-60's) regarding technology and not working in a cubicle. Too much change for them I guess
Everyone on my team is sick right now and they are all here! I keep hoping to avoid it. If the first person to get sick had just stayed home, everyone else could've avoided it!

Gross wording ahead, warning. I just have to get this off my chest. I share a cube wall with a chick that is chronically sick, but doesn't visit the doctor. Some antibiotics would probably clear that right up! We need work from home privileges - if she won't go home sick, I should be able to spare myself whatever she's got going on over there. She coughs so loudly and it's so phlegmmy that I swear she is going to throw up one of these times. It's positively revolting! My headphones are on full blast and I can still hear it. I'm not even sensitive about vomit but I'm feeling queasy listening to her.
Does anyone else have this problem?! I feel like recording it and marching it into our director's office - but guaranteed she can probably hear her from there. Why are people allowed to work when ill like that?
