OK ladies…I’m making my first trip ever to Hobby Lobby this weekend. I haven’t shopped around, but I do also have a Michael’s and A.C. Moore close by too but haven’t stepped in one in year. Which craft stores do you shop at? Do you feel that the products at some are superior to others? I need to get some DIY supplies for making some of the centerpieces, chalkboard signs and guest gifts (as its a B&B we’re making baskets with a mix of toiletries and baked goods). I am on a budget but if something is really much better quality for a couple of dollars more, I don’t mind.

@orchidblooms: I’ve so far only used Michael’s for actual in-store purchases. The nearest Hobby Lobby is a bit of a drive and so far I haven’t had a big enough project to warrant driving all the way there. I’ve a Michael’s and Joanns near by but Michael’s so far has had the best quality, good sales, steady coupons. You get a 40% off every time you make a purchase. Plus I’ve got the coupon app on my phone so I’m constantly getting additional coupons by text. Have fun!

Thanks! I might refrain from purchasing the first time I go there and just write down names and prices of items and compare them all/view Black Friday ads before making big purchases. The 40% off at Michael’s sounds amazing!

I have Michaels, JoAnn, and Hobby Lobby available, so I can shop around. Michaels has a better selection on some items, Hobby Lobby is better at others. I prefer Michaels because they’re open on Sundays and have better coupons. Definitely shop around and compare prices. You’ll probably find that they’re fairly comparable to each other.

Hobby Lobby and Michaels, I loved JoAnn’s but there isn’t one near me now. Also, some Michaels stores will take Hobby Lobby coupons, you just have to call and ask.

@orchidblooms: I’ve found Hobby Lobby more expensive in general. They have a LOT of decor stuff, none of which is my style, so I find it annoying to have to go around the much bigger store full of stuff I don’t want. I prefer Michael’s or Joann’s depending on what I’m getting.
One thing to keep in mind- Joann’s & Michael’s take each other’s coupons (assuming you’re using it on something sold at both stores). HOWEVER… Joann’s will let you use every coupon you have in one transaction. Michael’s only allows you to use ONE couple per day! They won’t even ring two up on seperate transactions for you because their company policy is “one coupon per person per day”. So if you have a 40% one item and another 50% off one item coupons you can only use ONE, where at Joann’s you could use both! Therefore, Joann’s almost always wins in my book.

I use Michaels most often – I don’t have the other stores being mentioned anywhere near me though. I don’t know if they even exist north of the border.
I love the Michaels coupons, they’re wonderful. I went in a while ago, made a list of all the stuff that we need and the price so I can plot out my purchasing strategy based on the coupons I get.

Like the other bee’s mentioned, Michaels has a large selection, better prices (most often), and better coupons.
I also shop at Jo-Anne’s from time to time. I refuse to spend my hard earned money at Hobby Lobby, however, because their CEO is a jacka**. He does not support women, therefore I will not spend my money their and support his business.

I did all my craft shopping online with a bulk wholesaler. None of these stores are available in Canada except Michaels and they double their prices in Canada.

If you have a Joann superstore near you, I find those have amazing selections. They are much bigger than a “normal” Joann’s.

Thanks for all of the advice! I did go to hobby lobby and they had some decent deals for Black Friday, but overall they were still more expensive as many of you mentioned. Michaels was good for Christmas goods and I’m hitting up Joann’s as soon as payday comes back around 🙂 @lia I never knew that about the coupons but will definitely keep that in mind as it saves a lot!

@orchidblooms: Also, if you have an iphone, all of these stores (Joann, Michaels, Hobby Lobby) have apps that you can get coupons on. It’s nice to have it handy on the phone app if you forget the paper coupons at home. Not sure about android phones.

@emstar168: Yep, all 3 have android apps. I have them plus a couple other coupon apps shortcutted to my main screen.
