I love to cross-stitch, so I've done (small) decorative pieces for friends and family with their names and wedding date. I always try to make sure that it matches the decor of the house -- registries are helpful for that! You always run the risk of folks not liking it, or whatever...but I know a lot of couples who have them up in their living room or hanging in the hallway or whatever. And I don't think they just put them up when I come over, either. ;-)
My favorite comment was from a friend who said that she actually started crying when she opened it. Apparently her mom (who I never got the chance to meet) had also loved to cross-stitch, made things like that for people all the time, and certainly would have done something similar for her daughter -- unfortunately, they lost her about a year before the wedding. So in a way my gift also stood in for one from her mom. And then when she told me that story, then *I* started crying. So there you go!
The next wedding I attend will *hopefully* be my MOH/best friend's. She was creative with her wedding present to me (not DIY though) so I want to give her something funky too. My plan is to frame maps of the city where she and her SO currently live (and also grew up), the city where their wedding is held and the city/island/country where they decide to HM. I secretly wanted someone to do this for our wedding but then realized that no one that we associate with is that creative.
If you are not breaking any copywrites, I was going to use a picture of my cousin + fiancee to make a custom label for a bottle of wine and put their wedding date on it. You can include 2 wine glasses, blanket, picnic basket, ect. (they live in the warm states).
I made a cross-stitch for my sister, but I asked her first if she'd like it (why put in the time to discover no?) and then let her pick one as complicated as any I've made (verrrry full ones that people think are real pictures). She choose a not terribly complicated latice w/roses and their names and dates.
My mom made a quilt for my friend's wedding in India to which we traveled. Again, she checked in advance if this would be appreciated and got the favorite colors.
Two friends of mine threw us an engagement party for their wedding gift.
Another friends frequently takes the wedding invitation and puts it into a shadow box with the bouquet or other details, or she'll put it onto a candle.
If they are christian, you can ask if they are doing a unity candle and offer to make it.
A friend of my FI makes the best! caramel taffys and has offered to make them for favors for our wedding as her wedding present. We've apparently talked this up too much because my dad checked with us that we told her the number of guests is 250, right? (Double our actual guests.)
My sister preserves lots of things and we talked about preserving jam for a favor for my wedding (but decided against because it'd be a lot of work and expensive for that many). A basket of her items is going into a charity auction I'm helping with this week.
So...I guess my advice is to ask if she'd like to receive something and it's worth your time. You can also offer to assist with a wedding related project (unity calendar, invitations, favors, etc.)

Just curious - what have you ladies done in lieu of giving gifts at a wedding? I always want to spend lots of money on a couple to bless and honor them, but at the place I'm at in my life I can no longer afford to do them! I was wondering if any of you DIY/crafty bees had any fun ideas for gifts to give a bride and groom!
