@lobbyart: If you are in NYC, you have access to some of the best fabric stores in the world! Just google and you will come up with a bunch of good options.
My advice would be to buy high-quality 100% cotton fabric and make sure you wash, dry, and iron all of it before you cut it. That will ensure that you quilt is washable and doesn't bleed, fade, or shrink.
Good luck - what an awesome idea!
@septcabride: Thanks for the tip! I'm a novice on the materials front, so I appreciate it! FI loved the idea of turning my dress into a baby blanket or something for the future, but the material would *never* work for that. This seemed like a nice alternative.
I get a lot (nearly all) of my fabric on www.fabric.com.
They have free standard shipping on orders over $35 and it usually takes just a few days to get it. They also give you an extra inch on all yards.
They usually have pretty decent sales, too. I haven't stalked them enough to see what their rotation schedule is but it seems about once a month, you can get a sizeable discount. I was watching a certain bolt that was, like, $13/yard that went down to $10-ish for a week, and then to $7.48/yd a week later before going back up to $13/yd. I noticed it did that same cycle twice in a quarter.
Also, you can Google coupon codes for them. You can use the codes for any fabric - discount or clearance fabrics, notions, and other items unlike Jo-Ann's where you have to use their coupons on only full price things.
I don't know if it's against the rules or not but I've found for some smaller projects if I can place whatever item(s) in my cart to get it over the $35 for free shipping and then add the discount code to bring it under $35, it will still register for free shipping! I initially discovered this by accident after I already paid for the order. I'm not sure if it's a loophole or what but I did do it one other time before feeling too guilty about it. I haven't ordered anything from them lately (last two months) so maybe it's fixed by now?
Like a PP said -- definitely wash and dry for shrinkage before doing any project!

Hey bees,
I'm hoping to make a quilt for my FI in our wedding colors as a present for the wedding. I have the basics on quilting down, but I have never purchased my own materials. I know some of you a super talented quilters and DIYers, so I wanted to see if you had good online or NYC sources for fabric!
Thanks in advance!
