some etsy sellers sell birdhouse card boxes that are really cute and say your new last name with established and your wedding date. i love this idea
we're using a mail box and decorating it with our hand prints and names as a nod to "Up" which we both love.

I found a beautiful antique glass and metal lantern. We'll be using that! I freakin' love it!
A globe with a slit cut in it?
A big vase or 2 that's a creative shape. They have some cool, large owl vases that would work.
Same with plant pots, like this one
You could have something like a tree or a clothesline or something like that and have people use clips to hang their cards off of them. Like a version of a wishing tree
You could cut a hole in the top of a doll house
@StaceVBee: My cardbox was a birdhouse from Etsy! It went well with the bird elements in our wedding. I loved it.
I made a card box out of three round hat boxes and decorated them with scrapbooking paper, and ribbons to look like our cake. It turned out really really well and is different than a regular card box :) Good luck!!!!!!
This one is probably the coolest I've ever seen! She did a fabulous job!
i was throwing out some old cpu monitors today and thought someone crafty with a IT/geek fetish could use this as a card box if they gutted it out and changed the front screen for clear perspex

I am looking for a creative cardbox too! I'm going to keep an eye on this thread. I'm having a butterfly themed wedding.

This is what I am did. I made it out of paper mache (sp?) boxes... a little paint and some ribbons went a long way.
I made my card box out of 4 square frames, plywood, a lazy susan, brackets and the top was made out of foam board, batting, fabric and ribbon.
I thought the large rustic wood lantern idea was pretty cool. I wish I saw that before I made mine.
I bought an unfinished barn shaped mailbox, that I painted and finished. Since we were married on a farm, it fit in well. Not the best photo of it, but you can see the cardbox all the way to the right on the gift table.
I love all of these but the mailboxes always catch my attention. It is casual and creative. Lovely.
@kala_way: I love that owl vase! I had never thought of that. I was planning on doing a box ala Mr & Ms Ferris Wheel, but that owl vase would work so well with other aspects of our fall wedding. 
We're using my FI's sock drawer. When he proposed, the ring was in his drawer with two black socks in the shape of a heart...so we'll recreate that :)
We used a gas can for our card box. It made people scratch their heads until they saw the rest of the wedding and then it made sense b

I am using a white craft pumpkin from Michaels and carving the top then my mom is painting "cards" on the front and maybe something else, who knows she is the crafty/artsy one not I!
Well here is mine! We are having a Christmas wedding and I found this super cute box and added the sign.
I'm using a vintage wood cranberry crate. Our "feel" is vintage/rustic New England and it is a Cape Cod cranberry crate so it's perfect. It's similar to this, but it has a lid:
