Yeah, we're shift workers in our house, so sometimes Tuesday is like my husband and his friend's Saturday. I just go ahead and go to bed.
Oh man, what a good question. I can never seem to do it tactfully.
Assuming you're good friends with these people, and hang out regularly, but just can't be totally straight forward with them, maybe start with like "So, when should we get together again?" I think starting to talk about the next time you'll see them is a good hint that THIS time is coming to a close.
When this happened this weekend, I was going to go get our sheets out of the dryer and go put them on our bed (I was washing them) and say "Goodnight" at 2 am. Thankfully DH got the end of the night to come and they were gone by 2:30.
In my experience, this seems to be a female thing. DH nor his male friend(s) have a problem going all night but his friends GF was getting annoyed as well.
In addition to the dog, a reader says he goes and gets in his PJ's but I sleep in undies and a shirt so going pantless in company is not very comfortable, LOL.
Ill usually just go to bed! Ill be like goodnight everyone! And then leave DH to deal with getting them out. If its my brother or sister in law then well just be like ok you have to leave because we have work tomorrow!
At my nieces birthday party yesterday, after the cake was served and the pinata opened, my brother changed the music to this awful clubby stuff. People headed out soon after that! haha.
@AbbyDabbyDoodleBug: Maybe that is where I went wrong. We had a good mix going on all night. I should have changed the station!
I usually just go to bed, and depending on who's visiting, fall asleep on the couch! Although, most people who come over we can just tell to leave because we have to go to bed early.
OH (haha, apparently I have a lot of these situations), I just look over at a clock and say "Hm, What time is it?" *yawn* that usually get's people being like "oh, yea... maybe we should go".
Well, since I live with roommates now... when we have friends over, I try to be the first one upstiars (so I'm not stuck). It sounds horrible :) Haha, I'm usually like, wow I'm tired so I'm going to sleep, see y'all later! IF I end up being the last one, I have no problem saying I really would like to go to sleep now... see you tomorrow :)
I usually just say, "Time for bed, good seeing you, need to do it again soon!" lol
I would really fail at this. Most people get the message but there are some that just don't and they are problamatic.
When I was a teen one of our guests insisted on sleeping over, this got my mother very angry.
@tiny tuna: I freaking love your pic.
We don't usually have people over cuz our house is so small, but when we go out, FI is TERRIBLE about leaving. So I'm always the party pooper and telling him I want to GO! When people do come over, they usually leave by 10 or 11 cuz they have to work as well :)
@soon2bhis- My husband is the SAME way!! Before we go out i'll tell him what time I'd like to head home and EVERY time that time rolls around he starting a new game of pool, suggesting a different bar, at the bar buying another round, or basically anything other than heading home. Once he starts drinking he loses all sense of time.

Besides letting out your 3 legged dog that scares everyone (no joke, I read about this tactic in Dear Abby), how do you get your guests to leave when you would like to go to bed? What about when your husband is no help to the situation and keeps dragging it out?
