Cricut? Silhouette? Something else? I'd love some recommendations!

I'm already married, so I won't be needing this sort of device for my wedding stuff. However, I have a couple of engaged friends, and my already-married friends seem to just keep getting pregnant! I suspect having something like a Cricut/Silhouette would be helpful in regards to making shower invitations, etc. But I have no idea what to get! To those who already possess an awesome cutting device - what should I get and why?

I've never used a Cricut so I can't compare them, but I have a Silhouette and quite enjoyed it.  I love being able to purchase shapes one by one online, rather than buying a whole $50 kit for one shape.

PS you might have more luck with this in the DIY section?  I think that's where I first heard of these things.

I really want to know too! My sister and I are looking at getting one for Christmas. Mum does scrapbooking and my sister is studying graphic design (and we both live at home still) so we think one would be great. We just don't know which!

@soon2bhis: Is there a decent variety available online? And is there any way to design your own outlines, or is everything pre-made?

Yup there is!  I haven't used it for awhile, and only used it for very basic stuff, so hopefully someone can pop on and give better info.

Say you want to do a heart (there are a couple options in your personal library already) or you go to the online store and look for heart and there's tons of different options.  There are also outlines for...say...placecards that come premade, but if you want to change something on them (ie fine details) you can select those details and remove them.

I don't actually have the software installed on this computer or I would send you a screenshot of the different options they have.

Maybe this can give you a better idea of what it's like. http://silhouetteamerica.com/training/section1_1.aspx

I want to buy a cutting machine too- and I've heard that with the Cricut you're limited to whatever shapes they have, but with Silhouette, you can cut out anything that's on your computer. This is why I'm most likely going with a Silhouette.

I'm also excited to use these machines to address my envelopes! I think they have a function where you can put a gel pen into the machine and they'll write onto paper.

The Silhouette is selling for $289 (and free shipping) from ebay.  That is the cheapest I've found online, and it what I'm going to be buying after I bought Christmas presents for everyone else.

I just purchased the Cricut Expressions 2 machine on black friday. They were on sale at michaels for 199. It came with 3 pre loaded cartridges. I'm using it for my STD's but am planning on using it also for when we have a baby shower and our kids' birthday party invitations. i absolutely love it so far! FI thought it was pretty  neat as well!
