- Wedding: June 2013
Long emotional info dump ahead! We’re planning these weddings long distance, and it’s been hard, but we’ve been managing. We’re in Cleveland this weekend for three days to get a BUNCH of stuff done – finalising the ceremony readings with the priest and music choices with the organist, tasting the caterer’s menu, tasting a bunch of cupcakes, having a shower, and finally scoping out the venue to ask some more questions. Well, everything had been going great. Then today we went to the venue, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, and the big main hall where we are having the reception suddenly has a huge construction site in one corner of it. They are redoing the exhibit in that corner and are not going to be done until September. I cried. It’s so ugly 🙁 It’s surrounded by big blank grey plywood sheets. And it cuts so much into the space we were planning on using, including the entrance to the hall itself which is now half as wide as it was, and all the guests will have to jink around the walled off construction site to get into the hall. It’s awful. The venue coordinator said he hadn’t known anything about the refurbishment in advance to tell us when we originally booked the venue (last September!) and that he felt bad (once he was dealing with a crying bride!) and would see what he can do. I wish I could explain how much it detracts from the space. It’s a big open hall full of dinosaur exhibits in all creams and greens and wood tones, and then suddenly BAM. Giant grey construction site blocking off one corner. My fiance did a good job of calming me down and suggesting things like covering the plywood with fabric or tulle or even a photo collage or something. But even dressed up, it’s SO intrusive and makes everything in that corner of the room cramped. We had our dessert buffet/lolly buffet planned for that corner and now we’re going to have to redo the floor plan. ARGH.
I’m so glad we found out now with six weeks to go though, and not the week before or heaven forbid, the day of! I can’t BELIEVE the venue didn’t call us when this started. How could they regularly host weddings and not realise that this massive eyesore might be a problem?!
Thanks for reading if you got through that!
