I ended up using a crinoline with my dress. They don't made the dress look as big as a hoop though.
It depends on how big the hoop and/or crinoline is. I have a ball gown, sorry not pictures, but I purchased the fullest petticoat that my bridal shop had, and it is very full. If you aren't changing into another dress for the reception and you plan to sit, you should purchase another crinoline/petticoat, so you have that option.

So when I bought my dress, the bridal salon recomended a hoop to go underneath my dress. They offered a rental of theirs for $100, but knowing that I could get a better deal, I declinded and kept my search open. I recently bought a hoop, with tulle attached to it, off the interent, however I didnt realise that it is hard to sit in! Does anyone else have this dilemma? Should I buy a different one, crinoline perhaps? Do you get the same effect with the crinoline as you do the hoop?
Thanks!
