I don’t have a ballgown but I had purchased a crinoline slip to help add some fullness to my dress.  When I took it to my alterations lady (not getting it altered in-store), she told me to lose the slip and she is just adding crinoline in herself.  She said she thinks the slips can sometime add a “sausage” effect and it’s easier and more comfortable to just add it in.  It’s cheaper, too!

I’m wearing a flexible hoop skirt to help puff out my big tulle ball gown. It might be 85 degrees when I get married. I tried the other slips and started sweating bullets. My legs in particular were melting. I was worried the hoop skirt would look ridiculous and pop up when I sit down but it doesn’t and it keeps me from sweating like I ran a marathon. Plus, it is so much easier to walk in my dress with the hoops. I got one that has a fabric train attached to it so it also puffs out my dress’s train and keeps my dress from getting grass stains and twigs and what not caught in the tulle.
