I’m so thrilled to say that my boyfriend of 2 years proposed to me on Friday afternoon!
We have a pretty funny relationship story – we actually met completely out of the blue via MySpace somewhere around 2008 or 2009. I was in college in Boston and he was living at home and working in Lake George, NY. We messaged each other back and forth for awhile before we became each other’s go-to friend to text after a bad date or breakup. I had been in a few bad long-distance, long-term relationships, and didn’t think I could do another one, so although I had the biggest crush on him, I decided to keep dating guys nearby (which, of course, was a terrible choice!). We fell out of contact for a year or two, and in 2012, after another awful first date, I decided I had had enough. I messaged him again, and after we started talking on Skype, I knew I had to give us a real chance. For some reason, I just felt like this was meant to be. I asked him to come to Boston the following weekend, and when we finally met in person, we fell in love immediately. We were dating by the end of the weekend and he moved to Boston a few months later to live with me. We now live in New Hampshire with our two cats and have talked about getting engaged for a few months. We picked out the ring and decided on a general timeline together, and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out!
Okay, now the proposal story:
He picked me up from work on Friday afternoon and brought me to my hometown (10 minutes away from where I work). He took me to the Audubon park right near the house I grew up in, and where my mom used to take me all the time when I was little. The park has beautiful scenery and man-made caves below a rock garden, which have always been my favorite place to go. He brought me to the top of the rock garden, got on one knee and asked me to marry him! There was no one else there and the sun was setting quickly, so we decided to take a re-enacted proposal photo with my phone’s selfie timer, haha. As an added bonus to picking this location – we already planned to do our engagement photos there, so we can re-create the proposal with our photographer – good choice, FI 🙂
After he proposed, we drove over to my parents’ house and surprised my mom with the news (he had called my dad beforehand for “permission”, so he already knew!) and then started calling my family members and friends. The next morning, we woke up early and drove to Lake George to surprise HIS parents, which was so much fun! Everyone’s reactions have been so overwhelmingly sweet.
Here are some photos! We’re hoping to be married in Newburyport, Massachusetts in October 2015 🙂 Looking forward to wedding planning with you all!
