I didn't register for crystal stemware or fine china. I actually inherited china from my grandfather and actually never considered placing something so expensive on my registry as stemware. One of my guests actually ended up buying some for me anyways and I am really glad they did. It makes the set complete in my mind and is actually something I know I will keep and eventually pass down!
I didn't think we'd have a use for it. We received a pair of champagne flutes as a gift from my mom, but that's pretty much all we have.
The FI & I are pretty big wine drinkers in that we like to try different wines. As anyone who drinks/appreciates a lot of wine understands there are different wine glasses for different kinds of wine. Well right now we have a big mismatched "set". So yeah for a couple that will use it very often we would very much like to have a nice set for dinner parties. We love to cook and invite friends over often, yearly for Christmas we make a big fancy dinner on Christmas Eve and invite family and friends over. So those are some examples that we would have uses for fine stemware. We would also like a set of everydyay stemware. We plan on registering for it and if people buy it they do, if not we might be able to take advantage of discounts offered to items left in registries.
A future Cousin in Law gave me a good tip regarding registries. You might think something is too much $$ for a A guest to buy. But what some people (think group of friends or coworkers) may do is chip in and go in together on a big item for you. Food for thought!
The only thing we registered for was a nice set of wine glasses (I love wine, obviously!).
If you don't think you'll use it, definitely don't register for it (even though the sales ladies will probably pressure you to!). As a wedding guest, I'd want to know that the couple will get good use out of my gift to them.
My grandmother gave me a set of crystal as gifts as I was growing up starting when I was a baby. It has been something that I have always enjoyed having. My mom used it a few times when I was younger for dinner parties and they are also are beautiful to dispay when not in use.
So I would say that I really value mine and it is a good time to get such things. I don't have much use for them maybe at this point (they are at my mom's house), but I plan on using them a lot later. I feel the same way about china.
We registed for wine glasses and margarita glasses. We've got a couple of champagne flutes. My dad has a set of crystal stemware that was his mothers and I'll probably receive that sooner or later, when we have more space.
we registered for 3 differnt patterns of crystal barware!! vera wang classic platinum, reed & barton soho and michael aram for waterford wood grain. love it love it love it! me & fi are big entertainers and I love beautiful stemware. i cant wait to serve martinis from the crystal pitcher. YAY!!!!
FutureMrsMorgan,
I have been eyeing the Reed & Barton solo since our china pattern has a platinum band. I haven't gotten a chance to see it in person though. Thanks for the comment! Did you choose the patterns you chose based on looks alone or are there other criteria?
in person, definitely. the pictures really dont do them justice. and theyve gone on sale 3 times since i registered so dont feel guilty about the cost.
When FI and I went to register, I had a totally different patterns picked out. but once i saw things in person, my opinions changed. have you picked out your china yet? have the sales clerk set all the pieces together for you. we ended up registering for vera wang grossgrain china. I cant wait to have fancy parties!!!
We are registering for it, thought I actually already have some I asked for for my birthday last year. I love love crystal stemware, its so heavy and and some of the patters are so nice. We drink wine all the time so I know we will use it (though my FI is afraid of breaking it). I think its a good investment and able to be used more everyday then fine china.
We love wine and drink it on a regular occasion and my mom loves to buy me crystal, so we picked out a pattern a few years ago and I've been getting pieces for my birthday and Christmas. I registered for the rest of the set.
I ended up registering for the Mikasa Parchment 58-piece set before I sent out our save-the-dates. I did it all online and was planning on going in-store and adjusting the registries accordingly before putting a link to the registries on our wedding website. What happened was my FMIL had the china set sent to me as an "engagement gift" before I got the chance to change the registries! I am contemplating registering for crystal stemware to compliment the china we received but I'm not sure if we should...
I picked one piece of crystal stemware--just the iced beverage glasses because I saw that as something that everyone at the table would use at a formal meal, and they wouldn't carry it around with them or use it other occassions like wine glasses. We picked Bellina by Lenox (our China is Wedgewood Notting Hill). For the wine glasses, barware and flutes we picked glassware from Crate and Barrel
Like china, we are going back and forth on this too! Currently registered for Waterford Lismore Nouveau but that may change....
For those that are worried about the price of crystal, have you seen "crystal sets" such as http://www1.macys.com/catalog/product/index.ognc?ID=280602&AdID=503737&LinkType=SiteAd
Has anyone seen these in store? Thoughts?
Like the china, we only registered for casual stemware. I would rather have nice bedding over crystal anyway. :)
We registered for the basic pieces (red and white wine and iced beverage crystal), but for now we decided not to get champagne flutes and accessories. We did get two toasting flutes, but other than that, we tried to just go with pieces that we thought we'd use a lot. We really aren't champagne fans.
We couldn't justify the prices, so we didn't get or register for crystal stemware or china.
I registered for nice glassware since my mom gave me her wedding crystal. But it's LEAD CRYSTAL! EEk. Still, it's a wonderful heirloom.
Real crystal is delicate and I'd be scared to break it. When would I use it? i just don't know
I only registered for crystal champagne glasses because I couldn't find non-crystal champagne coupes (as opposed to champagne flutes).
We registered for everyday china and fina china as well as everyday stemware and fine crystal stemware. Although it may not be used too often now, once we have a family, grow older I feel that these will be a staple in our home.

I see a lot of back and forth on Fine China. What is everyone's thinking on crystal stemware?
