I has it right now!
Dear Guy Two Rows Over...
Seriously, shut your ringtone off if you're expecting, oh... 562 calls in the next 12 minutes. I do want to congratulate you on having THE most annoying ring tone on the face of this planet! Also, way to go on the personal calls to your gf and kid! You could at least go with the herd and pretend you are working.
He thinks its hysterical and after an episode like this, I have to do everything in my power to not take a stapler and introduce it to his forehead.
I am going to take his phone, shut it off and put it in the drop ceiling.
We have one of those. We pick up the phone and answer it around here and I've threatened to do so. The wife on the other end of the phone don't usually appreciate their husband's cell being answered by some lady.
We also mute it and then hide it on purpose and then tell them that maybe NEXT time they'll learn to silence it.
Seriously, people are so dumb. You should put a stinky filter in his cube, under his chair and then let him try to figure out why it's him that smells so bad =]
Oh you should put it in the drop ceiling but don't shut it off (remember that episode of The Office where they did that)!! SO funny!
When this used to happen in my office, we would put a passive aggressive post it note on the phone that said, "TURN YOUR RINGER OFF! Love, people in surrounding cubicles."
LOL!
Dear Guy Two Rows Over...

That is hilarious!!!!
ugh, i have an office right now, and next week we're moving and it will be back to cubicles. this post says it all. my job truly sucks.
I wish I was joking about the amount of calls!
And sometimes, he's just so adorable. Oh! I just have to tell you this. He leaves his cube for a meeting and leaves his phone there. But the calls? They don't stop. No!
So the phone goes through a full ring, goes to voicemail and apparently whoever is calling just has the cutest aversion to voicemail because they just ring the phone again! Like he didn't hear that god awful ring set at leavel 200 volume. Isn't that the bestest? This goes on for sometimes 10-15 minutes solid. I want to kick his girlfriend in the front-pants for it.
I wish I could leave a ransom note.
"You can have your phone back when you learn how to be considerate to everyone else who works here, jerkface."
Why don't you just put a note oin his phone? i mean, seriously. Or silence it yourself....it's distracting you from your job =]
You could leave a ransom note, but remember to turn the phone off before you steal it lol.
@MrsSpring, I love when Andy flips out about his phone screaming, kicks the trash bucket, and the camera goes directly to Jim who looks like he is afraid for his life...
See, MissACS, The Office makes even a crappy day better! Jim's expression is priceless; he just turns back to his computer with a terrified look on his face. Lol! But my favorite is when Andy punches the wall and then immediately turns normal again. :) Oh, man, it gets me every time!
And every time you think of your crappy, totally inconsiderate co-worker, you can just remember that at least you don't have to work with Dwight K. Schrute! Ahhh, better already!
I don't understand why people don't put their phones on silent in the office. Seriously! I actually had to go to the cubicle one row over last weekend to tell the guy to can it. I come in on weekends so that it's quiet and I can work, not so I can listen to your stupid phone or your very dramatic conversation about how to log in to a survey site.
Hasn't anyone heard of cubicle etiquette?
Someone in my office has a Jetsons ringtone and it's SO LOUD. It sounds like space bells chiming the part "Meet George Jetson" over and over. WHYYYYYY.
Hi, it's called a vibrate setting. When you're at work, use it.
Erg one of the women who works here is ALWAYS leaving her ringer on! And then, when we tell her to silence it, she goes "well, it is on silent."
That's when we have to kindly point out to her that if it was on silent we would not be able to hear it. Oy. Then she goes on about how annoying it is to turn it off for work and back on when she gets home. Really? Really?
omg. i totally understand!!! thankfully I have moved positions and am no where NEAR him anymore - but in my old department our SENIOR position person - wasn't his cell phone - but his office phone - constantly allllllllllllllllllllll day long he's on the phone with his wife (who apparantly can't do ANYTHING without his allowance...) and also can't discipline their two (dear god, she just had a third!) children at home so she calls him up to have HIM yell at the kids WHILE HE'S AT WORK!
my father woulda KILLED my mother if she'd have ever done that...but it was an every day thing...i can not tell you all how much happier and more un-stressed I am having moved positions. :)
then there are the ones with the ring tones...I always feel stupid if my phone starts beeping with email or text and I forgot to set it on vibrate...it goes off all day long and so I have it on vibrate so much I forget to turn it back ON when I go home and miss calls! lol. :P
I don't even have a complete cubicle. I have two low sied ones on my left and my right and back are completely open. I hate it because everyone can see what I am doing all day. When I am on my break and on the internet I always feel guilty if people walk by and see because they will think I am slacking.
I would just turn the phone off, and leave a note. Or if he's there, talk to him directly about it. People need to learn!
mu cubicle is right next to this guy's office. he talks on his phone on speaker phone for every single call and it's so utterly annoying. i don't need to hear both sides of every conversation you have!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The worst for me is when the phone is in a coworker's purse and the person keeps calling. I don't want to root through someone's purse to turn off their phone, but if she's at a meeting and her phone won't quit, it's distracting!!
haha - we don't generally have this problem in our common office, most of the people in there know to put their phones on silent or answer quickly if they aren't going to silence it. However, I am amazed at some of the rude counselors in our call center that will leave their ringer on - callers can hear their phone ring in the background! Come on, use your common sense people!!
It's actually gotten better for me now that we're in cubicles! My desk used to be in a common area with 4 offices around it and OH MY GOODNESS! One guy doesn't have great hearing and so uses speaker phone and talks rather loudly and another would leave his cell phone in his office and his wife would call constantly. If he wasn't there she would call his office, call his cell (which was NEVER on silent), call his cell again as soon as she hung up and then call his cell again 5 minutes later. Wash, rinse, repeat. It was RIDICULOUS. Fortunately, they're remodeling the building and so now we're all in a temporary place with big cubicles. The best part is that it's made everyone MUCH more aware of themselves and how much noise they make. The hard of hearing guy even spent the first week or two visiting with us after each call to see if it was too loud!
So yeah, I'm with you there ACS. Not fun. And doing something about it is totally justifiable.
Ugh! I have a coworker who does this. He takes all his calls and has no intention of making an effort to keep them short. I've heard everything, his lab results from the doctor, how much he weighs, what grades his son got in school, what him and his wife like to do on vacation (they always book the romance package), how annoying his friend Dave is, etc. The list goes on and on. And he's LOUD. But, he's one of those employees that's been here for forever, so no one will say anything, and the president is very hands-off when it comes to stuff like this. He thinks we should just all work it out ourselves. So, we can't do anything about it except to complain to each other.
Yeah, that is my fave office episode EVER. I like how after Andy punches the wall he says something like "Yeah, that was an overreaction."
MissACS, you are hilarious.
i just thought of something else! the guy that sits across the "hall" from me clips his finger nails at his desk!! it's a really gross sound.
instead of a passive agressive note, which i do enjoy in kitchen situations, I think cell phone violations require some level of trickery. Take the phone, go to the "get it now" section, and choose the most girly ridiculous ring tone, like "girls just wanna have fun!" or old Paula Abdul or something. Put the 1.99 on his desk to cover the ring tone costs. and just wait til the next time he's super embarassed by his loud annoying ring!!!!!!!!
@Melissabegins, that is so freaking funny.. I vote for your method!
I love that episode of The Office, that is when I fell in love with the show!
As for the annoying ringtone man, maybe you could walk up to him and say "o your phone has been ringing on loud all day, you must not know how to put it on silent. let me show you so your all set for tomorrow!"
Haha, I had an office in my previous job and it was actually worse than my cubicle now! The walls were so thin and the guy in the office next to me was constantly on speakerphone and yelling into it!! I couldn't even call clients he was so loud I'd have to wait until he went to the bathroom or something. I love cubicles! :)
At my old job I had a half-cube in an area with about 9 other people. The personal phone calls were annoying and the only thing worse than stinky-lunch-guy was stinky-fart-guy. We were also right next to the front desk so I got to hear every stupid conversation the receptionist had with every person who walked by.
Stinky-fart-guy also happened to be the worst cell phone offender. We all worked in various labs and he would leave the phone at his desk (at full volume of course) and go to the lab for 4 hours.
I started bringing headphones to work and listening to my iPod or internet radio. It was the only way I could concentrate! I've also found that people bother you less if you have headphones on so I sometimes wore them with the iPod off :)
Annoying Phone Guy's cell is broken. Apparently his cube phone is broken too. I had nothing to do with either, I just think Santa really came through for me this year. That's all.
But... now he's sitting in the cube next to me, vacated because everyone is on vacation this week. He's talking to his GF, and apologizing in a low voice for his phone being broken.
I'm waiting until he's out of the area, and I am going to go unplug that phone from the wall jack.
HAHAHA! I totally know what you are talking about!!
The one that gets me is when people feel that they need to listen to their voicemail on speaker phone!!! Drives me up the short wall that surounds me!
This isn't exactly the same but a couple times in my fnance class someone's ringtone went off and it was the theme for Indiana Jones! The professor said 'At least it's a lovely tune' to break the ice but seriously? You are a GRADUATE student! Turn off your phone and if you have a call that you need, have it on vibrate and leave the room to answer it!
LOL! OMG, this is too funny. I'm so sorry you're having to deal with an annoying coworker. That said, totally turn the ringer on low (so you can't really tell where it's coming from) and put it in the drop ceiling. OMG, I would die, hilarious.
I have a cube (albeit with high walls) and I often feel weird when people come in and I have non-work stuff up (like weddingbee). Maybe if you feel self-conscious you could make a sign that says "I am on break" and put it next to you!
These cell phone ring stories are funny....but man I would not ever actually touch someone's phone. You don't want him to go ballistic on you and say you violated his personal property! I would just leave an anonymous note saying that he is driving everyone crazy with the ringtone and to please put it on vibrate.
My freaking boss (grrrr) has an obnoxious country song as her ringtone that rings SO loudly and she is one of those that never answers her phone but doesn't silence it either - so she'll stare at it while it's ringing but not bother to hit the little button to silence it.
Yup, we're all impressed with your ringtone, boss! Good job! (rolls eyes)
lol that is hysterical. In my office about four people have the SAME ringtone (which is also mine but I always turn my ringer off during the workday) so when it rings you have like 4 people sprint to their desk and answer their phone at once.
Do they even talk about anything productive?
