FI and I are having a small (80ish) person wedding in October. We're pretty non-traditional and were thinking of serving our guests cupcakes instead of a cake --- but I'm learning cupcakes are 'in' and I don't want to do anything like that.

Do you ladies have any alternative ideas to cupcakes or a cake? If not, what would you prefer at a reception? Thanks!

I've heard of a few people doing doughnut cakes.  They're are tons of pictures online, and they look really cute and tasty.  It's tempting and really different.

We're doing bread pudding and tiramisu- a "Desert Buffet" if you will. Because FI loves tiramisu and I love bread pudding. Maybe show off your personalities in your deserts? Our caterer also mentioned that alot of their weddings have used cannolis. :o)

Well if the cupcakes were originally what you were wanting to do, then why are you against them?  Only because they are trendy now?  If having them is going to make it easier, practical, and maybe even help with your budget, i'd go for them.

You could try a traditional dessert dish from your ancestery or from a country you both enjoy. Croquembouche are an off-the-beaten path favorite. You could also talk with a baker you like/want and see what their non-traditional favorite is to make. I wouldn't worry about what's "in" as most of your guests have no idea what is trendy and what isn't at weddings. Just pick something you will enjoy.

i agree with toffee - most guests dont go to that many weddings and know what is "trendy" and isnt, we just do because we are in the midst of planning. do what you feel fits yall best, and people will love it no matter what! :)

We're doing cupcakes! They are definitely a bit of a trend right now, but my view on that is that most of your guests probably aren't as immersed in the wedding world as we are. Many of my guests don't go to very many weddings each year, so it's possible they've never seen cupcakes at a wedding!

is there a dessert you both really like? some people use cheesecake, or a pie bar. i don't think anything's wrong with doing cupcakes just because they're "in" if that's what you like. we're doing croquembouche because i'm not into cake, and our chef is french so he'll make an amazing croquembouche. and i think they're beautiful.

We are doing cupcakes and I think most people won't know they are trendy because only people getting married read wedding blogs as much as we do.  I also made cupcake sticks to put in each one to make them unique.Cupcake or Cake? : wedding cake cupcake reception dessert Cupcakesticks

The vast majority of people that attend your wedding will have no idea what is "in" in weddings

We will most likely do cupcakes and a small layer cake for us two. Our favorite bakery is a 3 hour drive from our wedding site. If you like it, do it anyway!

I think if you want to do cupcakes then do them. Most ppl don't know what's "in" as far as weddings. They'll probably be looking for a traditional wedding cake.

I think cupcakes are a great idea however we are having a traditional three tier cake.  If you are lookin for something different though, i went to a wedding last summer where they had wedding cookies instead of cupcakes/cakes.  They had cookie brides, grooms, doves and cakes.  They were tasty and everyone commented on how different they were.  They also went down a treat with the coffee/tea which they were served with. Yumm! xx

I'd like to have a wedding cheesecake (buy one from the Cheesecake Factory...easy peasy), along with pies, ice cream, and popcorn. I've heard of a literal cheese cake wedding cake, which is just rounds of cheese stacked on each other; and I know of a couple who "scooped the ice cream" with an engraved ice cream scoop rather than cut the cake.

We are having about 130-140 ppl @ our wedding.  I've had my heart set on cupcakes for 3+ years now so thats what we are doing.  We are having 3 different kinds of cupcakes/frosting and then a small 6in cake for us to cut into and eat.

Our menu price already includes desserts so we are actually having our baker prepackage the cupcakes in small kraft colored boxes tied w/ ribbons and our monogram.  The cupcakes will be stacked into the shape of a wedding cake so the guests can take their cupcakes to go!  I saw it in a Martha Stewart bridal magazine last year.

I love the cupcake idea because you can choose so many different flavors.  We're going to use smaller cakes as the centerpiece on each table.  People will be encouraged to try out different cakes and mingle with other guests.  I also really like this idea which we might try to figure out how to include. We're doing cupcakes. Not because they're "in" but because my good friend has a cupcake business on the side and is giving us a GREAT deal.

I wouldn't worry about not doing something because it's "in" or "out." Just be true to yourself and what you want. Who cares if it's trendy or not?

Thanks for all the ideas, ladies!! I love the cookie idea!

I guess "in" wasn't the right expression to use. My FSIL is getting married 30 days before us, and also wants cupcakes (twas my idea but so were the colors and dress she 'borrowed' from me). Half our guests will be at her wedding and I don't want to give the appearance of copying. It's a verrrry long story.

I love everything you all are doing and all your suggestions. Thanks again!

I agree that for most wedding trends, people don't know they're trendy because they aren't up on wedding trends -- but  cupcakes have been super trendy for a while now independent of weddings.  I think that if you have ONE trendy element you're fine!!  Especially if it's what you originally wanted.  That said, you could go with a dessert bar, or maybe cream puffs, eclairs, a gelato cart, brownie pops?  I guess all those but the first two are trendy, but could be really yummy!  Good luck

I wouldn't toss out the cupcakes idea b/c you don't want to do the "IN" thing.  Do what works best for you and your FI.
