If you store them in an airtight container (like a tupperware) you can store them outside of the fridge for a day. I personally like doing that to avoid condensation that sometimes forms on the cupcakes if you stick them in the fridge. Good luck!
That's a really nice gesture from you! You should totally be fine with an airtight container and at room temp. Sometimes, if they're in the fridge, they get condensation on the top. Not so great to decorate with. Or, if you needed to store them super long, you can freeze them.

I'm baking cupcakes as a thank you to my FMIL for the great shower she thew us and the stand mixer she gave us. I'm not decorating them until tomorrow. Is it better for the baked cupcakes to sit in a container or store them in the fridge until tomorrow? It's hot here and I don't want them to get dried out or taste bad.
