I used foam and wrapped it like a present and made a very cheap 3 tier cupcake stand. I think materials cost between $8 and $12. Here's the end result:
That cardboard cupcake stand does not look sturdy and I'd be scared someone might accidently tip it over. I LOVE MRS. DG's IDEA!! Very creative and much more cost effective!
I'm totally buying a stand. I want a giant one, and don't trust that I can build one that can hold enough cupcakes, so I found one for ~$44 that holds 300 cupcakes.
It's at: http://cupcaketree.com/cct.html
I think Mrs. DG has a great idea there. If you wanted a round cupcake stand then get round foam. It probably will be the least expensive you can find.
I like Mrs.DG's stand. I am all about DIY'ing. I agree with PP the cardboard one looks a little flimsy.
I prefer cakes over cupcake towers. Just my opinion. Why do brides want them?
I think it's personal preference Blondie. For us, my sister did all the cupcakes for us as a wedding gift. They were great, such a portable option for our huge outdoor venue, and was perfectly in keeping with our informal whimsical theme.
For me, cake was like lowest on the priority list, and I just absolutely could not see paying several dollars a slice!
I think cupcakes are a fresh take on the cake thing. Plus cakes are ridiculously expensive and though fondant is gorgeous, nobody even likes how it tastes!
I'd say that the cupcake stand is too expensive considering that it doesn't look that sturdy and you'd have to buy materials to decorate it too.
@Mrs.DG- Thats nice of her to do for you! I guess I didnt think of that way of a money saving issue. A family member of mine had expensive sprinkle cupcakes and I thought it looked weird but thats the first time I have ever seen them. I guess its a new growing trend and great $saver if you dont use the expensive ones. Ill get use to them!

I want to have cupcake tower instead of a big wedding cake
(1) because i think it's so cute
(2) there is a serious lack of good cake decorators in this country (Central America)and i don't wanna risk a cake-wreck
(3) we're having a sort-of-destination wedding 3 hrs drive away and I think cupcakes will be easier to transport and then just stack them at the destination.
And we'll just have a small layer of cake on the top for us to cut.
So I found this cupcake tree online for $36, (from save-on-crafts.com) I think thats expensive for some pieces of cut out cardboard. Plus I'll have to decorate it. Am I being cheap?
Does anyone know a better way to DIY? Or should I just order the darn thing?
Or has anyone ordered this stand? Is it good?
