As seen is this post on Style Me Pretty :
http://www.stylemepretty.com/2010/03/03/wedding-cupcakes-in-teacups-love/

How cute/elegant/classy/vintage/AWESOME is this?! Plus, cupcakes can get messy. This way the guest has a fork and a dish to help minimize the chances of getting yumminess on their fancy wedding clothes!
I figure even if I can't find pretty china to rent, perhaps I could rent white china and dress it up with a pretty doily in one of our wedding colors between the cup and saucer? Our venue is a mansion that is over a century old so I think this will look perfect there!
Does anyone else LOVE this idea?
Love it!! Are you really considering doing this? If so you have to come back and post pictures! I think it would look great with a variety of mixed china, like if you went around and bought out all the stuff at consignment shops, but only if they're pretty tea cups not ugly mugs or something. Either way, I think you need to go for it so I can live vicariously through your pictures ;)
i love it! looks so cute. i seriously think i might try to do this for my bridal shower! i def think if you get white china and put a colorful cloth/doily it would look awesome. you can alwasy do mismatching china too. say if they were quite similar or your wedding colors.
THAT IS JUST GORGEOUS! And for whatever reason, it just makes the cupcakes look even more appealing I seriously want to eat one of those right now, and I'm not much of a sweet tooth.
That is SO CUTE! Ahhh, love it.
If you do it, you have to share pictures!
My wedding's not till October, but I'll totally post photos! I've been engaged since July and it seems like just this past week everything is sort of falling into place style wise. I knew I wanted cupcakes but most of the cupcake towers that I'd seen just weren't doing it for me. I think the mis-matched china idea might be really cute, too! My mom and I looove antiqueing so this could be something fun and totally do-able for us!
I LOVE THAT!!! It is way! to Cute!!
what a great idea for a bridal shower! or bridesmaids luncheon or something!!
this look so cute... i had never seen it, i will work perfect for a garden wedding or bachelorette party
I love that idea and never seen it before! I think with your venue that would extremely cute!

This is how they did their actual display. Then it looks like the rest were all on tables for guests to pick their flavor. I love absolutely everything about it!
And for the millionth time (sorry about that)...this is my venue...

I think it will be PERFECT for my venue! I actually feel relieved to have found this because I was seriously stressing how to display the cupcakes in a way that would do justice to my over a century old venue!
Love the idea! Hate the fact that I will definitely not have the time, nor the funds, to make something like this happen.
Imagine paying your baker to place your cupcakes in the teacups! And finding the teacups :(
I'm not so hot on my tower either, but it comes free with the cupcakes.
I love it :)
I want to do it for my bridal shower!! how freakin' cute!!!!!! anyone know where you can find pretty but cheap teacups and saucers?? ;X
Do y'all think I could just ask my baker to just remove the paper baking cups before they deliver the cupcakes, then have one of our waitstaff put them in the teacups? If the baker won't remove the paper baking cups, I'm sure the person putting them in the cups can pull them off as they put them in teacups.
Our wedding is pretty small...85 guests, so it's not like the server would be pulling baking cups off cupcakes till the cows came home, but at the same time...I could see how it could turn out to be a total pain in the ass.
Or, would it be weird to keep the baking cups on the cupcakes? I need some opinions on this as I'm sure it would save a ton of time and hassel...but I need some honest opinions on if y'all think it would be weird to keep them on.
@bellamargot I think you *could* leave them on and it would be fine or just ask your waitstaff or baker what they think...
another option would be asking your baker if he could make them directly in the pan without using the paper baking cups? that might be a possibility as well
My mom is throwing me a kitchen themed shower...and I really love this idea! I wish I could figure out something similar...like putting them in measuring cups? lol maybe pink ones?? :X ??! maybe you have another idea ;)?
You are lucky, the look is so adorable!!!
I think ask the baker if they would not use paper liners - they're to prevent the cake from sticking though, so the cake may not look as awesome. But the sides should be hidden by the teacups. They may have acrylic individual liners which are easy to pop off the cupcakes. Who knows what they have - you'll have to ask !
If you're adding additional 'tasks' for the baker to preform - make sure to draft up a new contract reflecting those additions.
Perfect idea for your venue! I think someone else used teacups and saucers to put their flowers in at each place. They may have them for sale in classifieds??? Otherwise check in 2nd hand stores and antique shops like you mentioned.
That would be so cute! And just think depending on the theme, the tea cup could be part of your favor.
This may get kind of expensive. I was doing hunting for this in the little towns near where I live this weekend, and while usually there are tons of things (and killer deals!) the china that was there was expensive! I think people are catching on to this whole "weddings using mismatched china" thing.
That said, it is a gorgeous look! :)
this is such an awesome idea!!! i'm totally bookmarking this!!
love it!
The first thing my caterer did when I met with him the first time & told him I wanted cupcakes at my wedding was run into the venue's kitchen. When he came back, he had a cupcake (in a teacup!) that they made the day before! It was blueberry butterscotch with home made whipped cream, and warm milk on the side! It was AMAZING! My mother laughed when he brought it out, because she knows about my obsession with cupcakes.
He had me at cupcake.
Just went teacup shopping this weekend for my centerpieces. Antiques run from $10-$24/ each depending on size. It adds up! You can probably try some thrift stores, too-- I haven't yet. My mom also said Target is supposed to come out with a new line of teacups on the 14th that are more the chintzy style I'm personally looking for, but I can't find them online yet. My point is, teacups for 85 people could be quite expensive, though I agree that it's completely adorable. I originally thought of getting teacups as favors, but I'd want to keep them all myself, and I don't need 75, not to mention that it just isn't feasible for us cost-wise.
try goodwill and tj maxx. also most rental companys have a more vintage style of plates and they almost always have teacups. ours are $0.45 to rent!
I found pretty china that I can actually rent!

It will cost $1.50 each for a cup and saucer. Plain white with just a silver band around it would cost $0.80 for each set so it's really not that bad of a price if you ask me! I'm also okay with the pattern not being colorful, because this means we can have colorful cupcakes and not have to worry about them clashing with the china! Our colors are light grey, plum, and coral, so I think the silver pattern will be really pretty :-)
What do y'all think?
Thank you all so much for your thoughts on this :-)
@bella...so pretty :)
do you think there is anyway I can incorporate this somehow in my Kitchen Themed Shower???!!
I want I want I want!
I love this idea...I think if you wanted a more eclectic feel you could try goodwill, salvation army, etc and get a bunch of different teacup sets...hmmm...now I'm inspired...
If you want to rent, that seems like a good deal.
If you want to buy, salvation army, goodwill, st. vincent de paul are all potentially great places. I know my local goodwills do a XX% off of certain days, so that might help. Also, if you have relatives/friends who are game for getting rid of some old china or will loan it to you.
Have you considered leaving the cupcake liners on and giving the cups and saucers as your favors? That way they can do double duty and you can allot more of your budget to purchasing them if that's the way you decide to go.
Hope this helps!!!
Ah! I love this idea. I agree with MaisyMay, maybe you could give the tea cups and saucers as your favors, that would be so cute.
It just dawned on me that I never posted photos of how mine turned out so here you go:
